Where I'm going?
Where I'm going, soon
If anybody ask you
Where I'm going
Where I'm going soon
I'm goin' up yonder
I'm goin' up yonder
I'm goin' up yonder
To be with my Lord
I can take the pain
The heartaches they bring
The comfort in knowing
I'll soon be gone
As God gives me grace
I'll run this race
Until I see my Savior
Face to face
I'm goin' up yonder
I'm goin' up yonder
I'm goin' up yonder
To be with my Lord
I'm goin' up yonder
I'm goin' up yonder
I'm goin' up yonder
To be with my Lord
The song "Goin' Up Yonder" by Tramaine Hawkins is a gospel classic that expresses hope for eternal life after physical death. The lyrics depict the singer's conviction that despite the pains and heartaches of life, they will soon join their Lord in heaven. The first line, "If you want to know where I'm going?" is an invitation for others to inquire about the singer's destination. The repetition of the phrase, "I'm goin' up yonder," emphasizes the certainty and determination of the singer's decision to leave this world and join the Lord. The phrase "Up Yonder" symbolizes heaven, which is above and beyond the physical world. The imagery of running a race and meeting one's Savior face to face suggests the idea of a spiritual journey that will lead the singer to the ultimate goal of being in the presence of God.
The song reflects the African American Christian tradition that teaches the existence of an afterlife where believers will be reunited with their loved ones and experience eternal peace and happiness. The lyrics carry a message of hope and comfort to those who are going through difficult times and encourage them to keep the faith and persevere in their spiritual journey. The song has been covered and performed by many gospel artists and choirs and continues to be a popular hymn in churches worldwide.
