Transit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And watched the water tear you away from me.
So I cried out loud, I cried out to you but I was too late.
I was too late.
So I went inside and felt a strange feeling come over me.
If I had reached out to you I could have kept you safe.
I could have kept you safe.
But now you're out there in the currents.
Buried underneath the waves.
And our past flashed right before my eyes.
(Our past flashed right before my eyes)
And I stood there motionless trapped in disbelief
So many times and so many moments we should have shared
Now buried underneath the waves.
I just wish I could tell you.
That I don't expect for you to forgive me or to forget
I'll just walk around this lifeless house
(I can't forget that you see right through me
I can't forgive if I never knew it.)
Singing songs I hope they catch your ear.
You see right through me.
(You see right through me.)
I'll look up and down the coast
The lyrics to Transit's song Castaway describe the regret and sadness that comes with losing someone. The first verse begins by setting the scene of the singer watching the person they love being torn away from them by the water, something that they were unable to prevent. The second verse delves deeper into the singer's feelings and the internal conflict they are experiencing. They begin to wonder whether they could have done something differently to prevent this loss and if reaching out to the person would have made a difference. The chorus then repeats the idea that the person they love is now gone and trapped "buried underneath the waves". The singer is then overcome with the memories of their past and is in disbelief that they weren't able to share more moments together. However, they still hold onto hope by singing songs in the hopes that their loved one can somehow hear them.
The song is a poignant representation of the heartache that comes with losing someone and the regret that often follows. The use of the water metaphor throughout the song adds to the emotional weight and serves as a reminder of how impactful and powerful the force of nature can be. The repetition of "buried underneath the waves" also serves to emphasize the finality of the loss and the idea that the person is gone forever. The lyrics also explore the idea of missed opportunities and how one's choices and actions can have consequences that they may come to regret. In the end, the singer is left with a feeling of helplessness and a sense that they will never be able to fully make up for what they have lost.
