Hang It Up
Transit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lay it out, lay it out, like a map on the floor and
Tear away the edges, you can throw away your fears.
You took off like a shot in the dark to shine your light against the world.
Will you float out there forever or hang it up when you get home?
Hang it up, hang it up when you get home.
Tear away the present, you can throw away the past.
Slow it down, slow it down wait up for me, kid.
Ride it out, ride it out listen and forgive (slow it down, slow it down.)
Pain is temporary, you will love and you will live.
You will live.
You took off like a shot in the dark to shine your light against the world.
Will you float out there forever or hang it up when you get home?
I never got to say goodbye.
I watch my whole town live their lives
Wasted like a jacket left hanging at the bar.
Hang it up, hang it up when you get home.
Lay it out, lay it out like a map on the floor and
Tear away the present, you can throw away the past.
Slow it down, slow it down, wait up for me, kid.
Ride it out, ride it out listen and forgive.
Pain is temporary, you will love and you will live.
You will love and you will live.
"Hang It Up" by Transit is a song about letting go of the things that weigh you down and overcoming your fears. The lyrics encourage the listener to take off the armor they wear when facing the world and hang it up. The use of the phrase "like a map on the floor" suggests that the listener should take a step back and reassess their life, laying it out in front of them in order to navigate their future. The line "Tear away the edges, you can throw away your fears" highlights the importance of facing your fears head-on and letting go of negative thoughts and feelings that hold you back.
The song shifts perspective to the singer's friend who left their hometown to pursue their dreams. The line "You took off like a shot in the dark to shine your light against the world" suggests that the friend was following their passion to make an impact, even in the face of uncertainty. The chorus again reminds the friend to "hang it up, hang it up when you get home" - to let go of their worries and focus on the present. The song ends with the singer reflecting on their own life, watching their town "live their lives/Wasted like a jacket left hanging at the bar," suggesting that they have learned from their friend's journey to make the most of their own life.
Overall, "Hang It Up" is a motivational anthem that encourages listeners to let go of their fears and focus on living in the present. The use of the metaphorical language, such as the map on the floor, and the recurring motif of hanging up clothing, creates a sense of tangible release that the listener can apply to their own life.

I love this album. as someone who grew up on punk rock and metal I think these dudes make better chill music than their harder punk stuff.

It makes me sad that they love this record so much, yet it gets panned by so many people. I realize there's still kids who love it, but people openly hate on it and I'm sure they get really bummed out.
