Rule of Nines
Transit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
While our backs were turned away.
Inside the fire we'll be
Consumed by it all.
Nothing but ash remains.
Eyes scorched, reflecting flames,
We will not go down without a fight.
Eyes scorched, reflecting flames,
But if we make it through the night
Would you forget this moment even took place?
And if we lose it all tonight
I Promise you I wont forget your face.
I won't forget you, no
I wont forget your face.
We will not go down without a fight
Eyes scorched, reflecting flames,
No we will not burn down, no not this time.
Smoke filled sun rays are all I can see.
Sirens sing my name in background like a choir.
They're singing.
We'll have to lose it all to know what's really ours
So many days, we take for granted
So many nights inside ours rooms
Were just wasting time.
We'll have to lose it all to know what's really ours
The lyrics to Transit's song "Rule of Nines" present a vivid metaphor for the idea that we often fail to appreciate things until we lose them. The opening lines set the scene of a neighborhood in flames, with a sense of chaos and destruction that is happening despite people's failure to pay attention. The singer is caught up in the chaos, with "eyes scorched" as he watches the world burn. However, he is determined to fight on and not let the flames consume him entirely.
The chorus reflects on the possibility that, even in the midst of such a catastrophic event, people might still forget the lessons they have learned. The idea that the singer might forget this moment seems to be in contrast to the intensity of the experience he is having now, but also speaks to the ways in which we often move on from traumas without fully processing them. The second half of the chorus, however, is more personal. The singer promises that he won't forget the face of the person he's speaking to, even if they lose everything around them. This suggests that even in the midst of destruction, there is the possibility for human connection and love.
