Skipping Stone
Transit Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I've always been better at believing
That you're better off
{Chorus}
Wherever you go,
Go with all your heart
Worn out, and broken in
And every memory
Is like a skipping stone
You'll never understand
How long it took the tides
To bring them back to us
I'm getting good at saying goodbye,
{Chorus}
And we grow into those sadder songs
And leave out love behind,
In every single line.
Maybe that's the only place it can really live
But you could never understand (you don't care x2)
You would never understand (you don't care x2)
Wherever you go(x3)
Every memory,
Is like a skipping stone
You'll never understand
How long it took the tides
To bring them back to us.
And we grow into those sadder songs
And leave out love behind,
In every single line.
I'm getting good at saying goodbye.
The song "Skipping Stone" by Transit is a bittersweet reflection on the difficulty of letting go of someone, even when it's the best thing to do. The singer admits that they've become "good" at saying goodbye, suggesting that they've had to do it many times before. However, they also acknowledge that they've always believed that the person they're saying goodbye to is "better off" without them, indicating that they've made a conscious choice to end the relationship for the other person's sake. The chorus then offers a few poignant images to capture the fleeting nature of memory and the difficulty of moving on. The metaphor of a skipping stone emphasizes the way memories can surface unexpectedly and then fade away again, while the lines "every memory/is like a skipping stone/you'll never understand/how long it took the tides/to bring them back to us" suggest that even though memories may seem random and fragmented, they're actually deeply rooted in our emotional connections to others.
The second verse of the song adds another layer to the theme of loss and nostalgia, as the singer notes that "we grow into those sadder songs/and leave out love behind/in every single line." Here, the singer seems to be acknowledging that heartbreak and longing are universal themes in music, but also that they often overshadow the positive aspects of love and connection. By leaving "love behind" in their songs, the singer may be implying that they've lost touch with the joyful and fulfilling parts of their past relationships, instead focusing on the pain and loss. The refrain of "you could never understand/you don't care" further emphasizes the singer's isolation and the feeling that their emotions are not being reciprocated or understood by the other person.
Line by Line Meaning
I'm getting good at saying goodbye,
I am becoming skilled at ending relationships and letting go of people.
But I've always been better at believing
That you're better off
I have always been good at convincing myself that the person I am leaving is better off without me.
Wherever you go,
Go with all your heart
When you leave, it is important to be fully committed to your next destination.
Worn out, and broken in
Like hand-me downs
Our memories are like old, used clothes that have been passed down and have become frayed and worn with time.
And every memory
Is like a skipping stone
You'll never understand
How long it took the tides
To bring them back to us
Each memory we have is like a stone that skips across the surface of the water, but we can never fully comprehend the journey it took to return to us.
And we grow into those sadder songs
And leave out love behind,
In every single line.
As we age, our music often becomes more melancholic, and we tend to focus on the negatives of love rather than the positives.

As someone who is going to school to become an audio engineer (and a fan of this band), I appreciate your comment. It is such an intensive process and to have a band that is so talented and creative is a breath of fresh air.

Huge props for being an original The Story So Far fan dude. I'll admit I first heard them in a store at the mall in like February of this year, that band has honestly entered my top 5 ever since.
