Second-guessing what you're thinking, taking everything that you can give 'em
And they think that money makes 'em into better human beings
While licking up fat from the meat that you fed 'em
'cause they set their trap right here in your home and you let 'em in, you let 'em in
And they are meant to be annoying and they're meant to make a mess
While the newsman casts a shadow meant to multiply your stress
And now a message from our sponsor will relieve you from the press
Soda pop You're swimming in soda pop
Wake up! It's soda pop
On every channel, soda pop
Women flock towards them with glittering smiles
And they talk about the industry, the atmosphere, the chemistry between them
'Til their one track minds click like the buttons on a paparazzi telephoto lens
Make sure you're dressed correctly 'cause they'll meet you at the door
Just remember who to greet and who to pointedly ignore
These vipers in a nest dressed in their Sunday best
Fondle and caress to the delicate strains of
Soda pop
You're swimming in soda pop
Wake up! It's soda pop
On every station, soda pop
Then home at 5, the weather's on
And hope tomorrow this feeling's gone.
Australia's got a culture just like any other land
But the music that we dance to is in the key of Uncle Sam
While a satellite drip-feeds TVCDVDPR firms worms!
The parasitic tracking of the people on the street
By a team of statisticians made to measure up the meek
Who incidentally won't inherit anything but lack of sleep
When they're let down, let down by
Soda pop You're swimming in soda pop
Wake up! It's soda pop
For fucking morons: soda pop
Soda pop On every station, soda pop
In every bar it's soda pop
On every channel, soda pop
Now it's gone too far
Soda pop
In every paper, soda pop
In every car, soda pop
On every channel, soda pop
Now it's gone too far and I say
Uh-uh, uh-uh get fucked!
The lyrics to Transport's song "Soda Pop" address the state of mass media and consumer culture. The song appears to target individuals who are living in a "bubble" created by the media and society at large. It speaks of the manipulative tactics of media personalities and corporate entities who are focused on expanding their own influence and wealth, regardless of the human cost. They use messages from sponsors, annoying advertisements, and the news to make people feel stressed, anxious, and overwhelmed. The lyrics describe how people have fallen into this trap and are swimming in "soda pop" - a symbol of the sugary, artificial, and ultimately destructive nature of consumer culture.
The second half of the song talks about the role of music, especially of American origin, in Australian culture. The lyrics suggest that the popular music of Australia has been shaped by the influences of American culture and media. This is contrasted with the role of media companies in tracking and manipulating the behavior of everyday people. The song ends with a frustrated cry of "get fucked!" which represents a rejection of the oppressive systems being critiqued in the song.
