From Elvis Presley to Marilyn

Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh

From Jackie O to J.F.K.
Little Richard and Lady Day

Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh

Everyone played a different role

Baby they were born to be sold
They were born to be sold
They were born to be sold

Now all I know is all I see
And what I am I choose to be
I don't need no one to bleed for me
I'm gonna make my own history

Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh

Here comes the news
Here comes the news
Baby, here comes the news, alright

I was born to be sold
All you hot shot, big buck
Sweet talking, side walking
Foot tapping, tail wagging
Back stabbing, money grabbing
Slaves of gold
I'm telling you, I don't need to be told
I cross my heart, rock my soul

Baby I was born to be sold
I was born to be sold
I was born to be sold
I was born to be sold

From Valentino to Fonteyne
Al Capone to John Wayne
From Harley D to Lenny Bruce

And back to Elvis and Marilyn

Little Richard and Lady Day

I was born to be sold

I was born to be sold
I was born to be sold

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Transvision Vamp's song "Born To Be Sold" appears to evoke a sarcastic theme of how famous personalities are like commodities, created and marketed to the general masses. The song is a commentary on the way celebrities are packaged and sold to the public. The lyrics list a range of famous personalities, from Elvis Presley to Jackie O and J.F.K., to famous actors such as Valentino, Fonteyne, Harry Dean and Betty Blue. The song implies that these individuals were "born to be sold," meaning their lives, images, and personalities were created to sell to the public, mainly for commercial purposes.

What the song also implies is that the singer is not willing to be sold to the masses in the same way as celebrities. The lyrics "Now all I know is all I see and what I am I choose to be, I don't need no one to bleed for me" highlights the singer's decision to create her own identity rather than conforming to commercial ideals. The line "I'm gonna make my own history," shows that the singer is more than willing to pave her path to success without catering to the whims of the masses.

Overall, the song is a commentary on how our society views and trivializes the life of celebrities, sometimes forgetting the humanity behind their public persona. What the song does is raise questions about how we consume and commodify art and personalities.

She has a great voice as well as a body and I still like Transvision vamp after all these years.

Wendy is not only a fantastic singer but is also a fantastic dancer. How can she be virtually unknown, but everyone knows the epic rubbish American pop singers???

She had a great voice. Super song from a really good album, and of course she was a female in a league of her own when it came to looks. I wonder why she never made it really big.

@Colin Vespa I have to agree with you the years (and substance) have not been kind to her at all. I accidentally came across the video from her latest album and I didn’t know it was her! lol I thought wow this old woman in her 80’s or at best her 70’s sounded a lot like Wendy James lol Then I read the description and it WAS Wendy James! lol I stopped watching and immediately pulled up my TransVision Vamp video playlist and had to watch at least a dozen or so videos to clear my mind of the images I saw lol. It was heart breaking to see her that way. To go from being one of the most beautiful, intelligent, strong and sexy women the world has ever seen to what she is now, talk about soul crushing. And sadly she’s still chasing the dream of fame and that stardom that comes from having a top ten single to a gold or platinum album. But time is running out for her and she’s already lost what caused a lot of young people (boys) to buy her records which was her looks and sexiness combined with a few genuinely good songs. Without the looks she will need a voice thats at least twice as good as it’s ever been. I’ve never heard or read anything about why the band broke up. To be honest I would bet it had something to do with her and nick the guitarist being in a relationship with each other. Anyway it’s safe to listen to her new song just dont watch the video lol
Cheers and Happy New Year!!

She did make it big, but like a bright flame, burnt too fast and faded quickly, the band disbanded in 1991, Wendy still performs solo, the years haven't been kind to her.

I prefer to remember her during the greatest years 1985-1991, thanks for the memories. I loved the 80s.....

Another great track from TranVamp, only a minor hit - but still a beauty!
