Transvision Vamp Lyrics

Well you got that girl and she lives with you
And she does just want you want her to
And when I call you on the phone, she says you're not there
But I know you're home-

You better tell that girl to shut up
You better tell that girl I'm gonna beat her up
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl

Well we used to be the best of friends
Now all that's gonna have to end
But there's just one thing that I can't see
How she's got got you hanging up on me

You better tell that girl to shut up
You better tell that girl I'm gonna beat her up
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl

Well I guess you're like that all of the time
But it takes more than that for me to loose my mind
Don't you know that I don't care?
Maybe if I hit her, maybe if I pulled her hair
Oh oh hey yey yeah

Well, she likes to seem intellectuel
And to be a musician she goes to school
And the way she acts is so uncool
I just can't stand her

You better tell that girl to shut up
You better tell that girl I'm gonna beat her up
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl

Ooh you better tell, yeah you better tell, oh
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl

Girl, girl, girl, girl, girl, girl

You better tell that girl to shut up
You better tell that girl I'm gonna beat her up
You better tell that girl

You better tell that girl
You better tell that girl to shut up!

The 80s. They had begun with a peroxide blonde girl and a bunch of almost-punk boys as arguably the biggest band in the world. And it looked like they were going to end with a peroxide blonde girl and a bunch of almost-punk boys… sadly not becoming one of the biggest bands in the world.

That comparison probably feels like a bit of a stretch. but let’s see how far we can stretch it.

“Tell That Girl To Shut Up” was a cover of an old punk song by Holly and the Italians, kind of like how Blondie – for they were the early 80s biggest band in the world, in case you hadn’t guessed – covered The Nerves’ “Hangin’ On The Telephone.”

That's probably still a stretch. I mean, lots of bands do covers.

But “Tell That Girl To Shut Up” – “tell that girl I’m gonna beat her up” – does bare a certain thematic similarity to early Blondie classic “Rip Her To Shreds.” Two themes in fact. Girl on girl violence. And girls rolling their eyes at other girls for, as Wendy James, Transvision Vamp’s resident peroxide blonde puts it, “well, she likes to seem intellectual, and to be a musician she goes to school, and the way she acts is so uncool. I JUST CAN’T STAND HER!!!”

Or as Debbie put it – far more succinctly - “Yuck! She's too much.”

“Tell That Girl To Shut Up” is an 8.

Always enjoy listening and watching the band. Pity it had such a short life. Deserved better.

@andyevans2336

Nice cover of the song originally by Holly and the Italians. Side note; Holly was the reason Mark Knofler wrote the song Romeo and Juliet after they broke up

I only discovered this band at the end of last year. I would have been such a huge fan back then! But it's like hearing something fresh now. Serious pop sensibility in this song.
