McCoy was born and raised in Geneva, New York. In high school, he met Matt McGinley in his gym class, and the two bonded over their love of music. They decided to start a band, and played with other musicians until Gym Class Heroes was formed in 2001. Travis made his MTV debut in the summer of 2002, as he appeared on stage at the beach house on a standard nation-wide MC Battle that was held on the MTV show Direct Effect.
McCoy was arrested on July 1, 2008 after hitting a man on the head with his microphone. The man had been in the crowd at a concert in St. Louis when he shouted racial slurs at McCoy. McCoy asked the man, "What did you just call me?" As security was removing the man from the venue, McCoy brought the man on stage to call him out in front of the crowd. In a statement, McCoy's publicist said that the man hit McCoy in his knee, which was in a brace after he had suffered a recent strain
In early March 2008, McCoy opened up about his battles with opioids. He stated that he had been addicted to pharmaceuticals since he was 15 years old.
McCoy dated singer Katy Perry, who appeared as his girlfriend in the "Cupid's Chokehold" video and toured along with his band on the Warped Tour, on and off for several years. He had given a promise ring to Perry, and when asked if this was rehearsal for an actual proposal, McCoy shrugged with a grin. The two broke up in December 2008. They began dating again in April 2009. However, they broke up a few months later.
McCoy is a vegetarian.

We outta control
We outta control
We outta control
Let's go!
Cuz after midnight
We let out the dogs
We outta control
We outta control
Let's go!
The rock and roller awesome sort of freak show
We're gonna board them up and bleed the sore and just let go
So when the clock strikes midnight everyone lose control
And let the freaks come out tonight
The city nine to five
Man I hate this job
It's gonna be the end of me
(It's gonna be the end of me)
And since when did time
(and since when did time)
Become my biggest enemy?
(become my biggest enemy)
I don't think this [?] so close to me
(so close, so close you to close)
Because at 11:59
I can feel it in my spine
Taken over me
(I-I-I feel it, I feel it taken over)
(hey hey)
After midnight we are out of control
We outta control
We outta control
We outta control
Let's go!
Cuz after midnight
We let out the dogs
We outta control
We outta control
We outta control
Let's go!
The rock and roller awesome sort of freak show
We're gonna board them up and bleed the sore and just let go
So when the clock strikes midnight everyone lose control
And let the freaks come out tonight
It's midnight
It feels right
Everybody's acting up
If you're a freak be proud of it
You got it from your mother
And I have rather good manners
I just choose not to employ them
It's about that time for you to embrace your flaws and enjoy
Them
Everybody in the back
Bring your ass up to the front and
Nevermind the fuss because we do what we want
You feeling how I'm feeling
Put your hands up to the ceiling
And say "We don't need no blocks let them motherfuckers go!"
After midnight we are out of control
We outta control
We outta control
We outta control
Let's go!
Cuz after midnight
We let out the dogs
We outta control
We outta control
We outta control
Let's go!
The rock and roller awesome sort of freak show
We're gonna board them up and bleed the sore and just let go
So when the clock strikes midnight everyone lose control
And let the freaks come out tonight

Travie McCoy's song "After Midnight" is a celebration of letting loose and being wild after the clock strikes 12. The opening lines "After midnight we are out of control, we outta control, we outta control, let's go!" sets the tone for the rest of the song, encouraging people to shed their inhibitions and let the freak out. The lyrics paint a picture of a rock and roll circus, where board-ups and bloodied sores are the norm. The singer urges everyone to embrace their inner freak and live in the moment, leaving the constraints of their 9 to 5 life behind.
The song's message is one of liberation and release from everyday stresses, highlighted in the lines "It's about that time for you to embrace your flaws and enjoy them." McCoy gives a nod to the idea that we are all different and unique in our own special way, and we should celebrate those differences. The chorus "After midnight we let out the dogs," is a metaphor for unleashing one's wild side and having a good time.
Overall, "After Midnight" is an anthem for breaking free and having a good time. It encourages people to liberate themselves from their daily grind and let their inner freak show shine. With its catchy chorus and upbeat tempo, the song is a feel-good party tune that celebrates individuality and a carefree attitude.
