McCoy was born and raised in Geneva, New York. In high school, he met Matt McGinley in his gym class, and the two bonded over their love of music. They decided to start a band, and played with other musicians until Gym Class Heroes was formed in 2001. Travis made his MTV debut in the summer of 2002, as he appeared on stage at the beach house on a standard nation-wide MC Battle that was held on the MTV show Direct Effect.
McCoy was arrested on July 1, 2008 after hitting a man on the head with his microphone. The man had been in the crowd at a concert in St. Louis when he shouted racial slurs at McCoy. McCoy asked the man, "What did you just call me?" As security was removing the man from the venue, McCoy brought the man on stage to call him out in front of the crowd. In a statement, McCoy's publicist said that the man hit McCoy in his knee, which was in a brace after he had suffered a recent strain
In early March 2008, McCoy opened up about his battles with opioids. He stated that he had been addicted to pharmaceuticals since he was 15 years old.
McCoy dated singer Katy Perry, who appeared as his girlfriend in the "Cupid's Chokehold" video and toured along with his band on the Warped Tour, on and off for several years. He had given a promise ring to Perry, and when asked if this was rehearsal for an actual proposal, McCoy shrugged with a grin. The two broke up in December 2008. They began dating again in April 2009. However, they broke up a few months later.
McCoy is a vegetarian.
Critical
Travie McCoy Lyrics

Then fine, I've been waitin' patiently for years
Fought lines, in my mind
I'm more unstable than I fear
And I don't know
Just take my hand
It's time to go
So just enjoy your blue moon
It'll be over soon
So we might as well have some fun (right)
It's getting Critical
Takes a minute for it set in
I'm unpredictable
And I'm dyin' just tryin' to feel alive again
If the time is near
Don't cry, look me in the eyes and dry your tears
Have a seat, right here
While Los Angeles disappears
And I don't know
Just take my hand
It's time to go
So just enjoy your blue moon
If we're gonna die soon
And we might as well have some fun (right)
It's getting Critical
Takes a minute for it set in
I'm unpredictable
And I'm dyin' just tryin' to feel alive again
It's getting Critical
Takes a minute for it set in
I'm unpredictable
And I'm dyin' just tryin' to feel alive again
The clouds surround us, The light leaves us alone
And the sky falls in your hand
Embrace the moment, cuz now we're headin' home
It couldn't be a sweeter end
It's getting Critical
Takes a minute for it set in
I'm unpredictable
And I'm dyin' just tryin' to feel alive again
The clouds surround us, The light leaves us alone
And the sky falls in your hand
Embrace the moment, cuz now we're headin' home
It couldn't be a sweeter end
In this song, Travie McCoy seems to be confronting his own mortality and the idea that the end of his life may be near. He admits to feeling unstable and unpredictable, but he invites someone to take his hand and go on a journey with him. The lyrics suggest that he doesn't want this person to be sad or cry, instead urging them to live in the present and enjoy the time they have left, as they are soon to face an uncertain end. Despite the darkness of the lyrics, there is also a hint of hopefulness and acceptance, as he seems to embrace the idea of heading home to a "sweeter end."
The repeated phrase, "It's getting critical," reinforces the idea that McCoy is in a dangerous place and time is running out. He acknowledges that it takes some time for this realization to "set in," suggesting perhaps that he has been in denial, or that the reality of the situation is hard to accept. Throughout the song he references Los Angeles disappearing and the sky falling, perhaps as a metaphor for the world coming to an end. However, the sweet, reflective ending suggests that even in the face of death, there can be moments of beauty and hope.
