McCoy was born and raised in Geneva, New York. In high school, he met Matt McGinley in his gym class, and the two bonded over their love of music. They decided to start a band, and played with other musicians until Gym Class Heroes was formed in 2001. Travis made his MTV debut in the summer of 2002, as he appeared on stage at the beach house on a standard nation-wide MC Battle that was held on the MTV show Direct Effect.
McCoy was arrested on July 1, 2008 after hitting a man on the head with his microphone. The man had been in the crowd at a concert in St. Louis when he shouted racial slurs at McCoy. McCoy asked the man, "What did you just call me?" As security was removing the man from the venue, McCoy brought the man on stage to call him out in front of the crowd. In a statement, McCoy's publicist said that the man hit McCoy in his knee, which was in a brace after he had suffered a recent strain
In early March 2008, McCoy opened up about his battles with opioids. He stated that he had been addicted to pharmaceuticals since he was 15 years old.
McCoy dated singer Katy Perry, who appeared as his girlfriend in the "Cupid's Chokehold" video and toured along with his band on the Warped Tour, on and off for several years. He had given a promise ring to Perry, and when asked if this was rehearsal for an actual proposal, McCoy shrugged with a grin. The two broke up in December 2008. They began dating again in April 2009. However, they broke up a few months later.
McCoy is a vegetarian.

Whatever the destination is I'ma leave all the numbas on the dash.
Sherif's tryin comin see me but it aint my fault.
Better say a prayer cause I aint trying to wait on the change like my name was john mayer.
I swear.
I came here to give em a show.
It's 11:34. I'm on a roll.
So I'ma have a little fun and ride till I see the sun, yeah whoa, yeah
Got the time, got a place.
If you want more of these Heineken's you go and give me my space, my space before I kick the dirt and head to the trunk to get you a little taste.
Yeah superbad.
I'ma get ya a little something that your sister and your mama never had.
Coulda been your dad.
I gotta go but ill be right back
It's 11:34.
I'm on a roll.
Its almost noon and I ain't got nowhere to go, ah yeah yeah, and this is the road of my life.
So I'ma have a little fun and ride till I see the sun, yeah whoa, yeah
Oh dad I'm traveling this is where I belong, yeah.
I said the road that I'm riding is where I belong, hey.
It's 11:34.
I'm on a roll.
Its almost noon and I ain't got nowhere to go, ah yeah yeah, and this is the road of my life.
So I'ma have a little fun and ride till I see the sun, yeah whoa, yeah
It's 11:34.
I'm on a roll.
Its almost noon and I ain't got nowhere to go, ah yeah yeah, and this is the road of my life.
So I'ma have a little fun and ride till I see the sun, yeah whoa, yeah
All of my life
, I've been cruising through it, taking it as it comes, and never looking back. The lyrics of Travie McCoy's song "Superbad" are an expression of this sentiment, as the artist sings about driving aimlessly on the open road, leaving his worries behind, and enjoying the moment. The opening lines of the song set the tone for the rest of the track: "Drive slow, drive fast. Whatever the destination is, I'ma leave all the numbers on the dash." The emphasis is on the journey rather than the destination.
The song goes on to describe the freedom that comes from letting go of any obligations or responsibilities and enjoying the ride. The Sherif may come, but it's not the artist's fault, and he won't stick around to wait for trouble. He's there to give his audience a show, and he's going to have fun while doing it. The chorus repeats the central message of the song: "It's 11:34. I'm on a roll. It's almost noon, and I ain't got nowhere to go. And this is the road of my life. So I'ma have a little fun and ride till I see the sun."
In summary, the lyrics of "Superbad" celebrate the joy of living in the moment, embracing the unknown, and enjoying the journey without worrying about the destination.
