Georgia On My Mind
Travis Tritt & Ray Charles Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The whole day through (the whole day through)
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind)
I said Georgia
Georgia
A song of you (a song of you)
As moonlight through the pines
Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
I said Georgia
Oh Georgia, no peace I find (no peace I find)
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind)
Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you
Whoa-whoa, Georgia
Georgia
No peace, no peace I find
Just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind (Georgia on my mind)
I said just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
Travis Tritt and Ray Charles's "Georgia on my Mind" is a romantic and nostalgic blues ballad that celebrates the state of Georgia, evoking feelings of longing and homesickness. The song opens with the lyrics "Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through, just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind." This sets the tone for the rest of the song and emphasizes the chorus's main theme of the song.
The song's first verse speaks of the singer's adoration of Georgia and how the state's beauty and essence are captured in the sweet and clear sound of the song that sings of her. The second verse sees the singer reflecting on other temptations in their life but ultimately acknowledging that their peaceful dreams always lead them back to Georgia. The third verse repeats the chorus and drives the message home even further.
The song's repeated line "just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind" portrays the idea of Georgia evoking feelings of nostalgia and longing in the singer's heart, making them reminisce about the state and the memories and experiences they had there. The song culminates in a beautiful, melancholic expression of the overpowering emotions that Georgia creates in the singer.

My name is Georgia. My dad's family was from Georgia. I was born in 1941 and Daddy insisted I would be named Georgia! Many years later, I was a student at Ohio State University in Ohio and a guy dated got tickets to surprise me to see Ray Charles and the Rayettes at the Auditorium. What a show it was!! One of the best nights of my life..Ray Charles is a master of song and when he sang "Georgia On My Mind" , I had tears in my eyes..so beautiful! I'll never forget it!
