Sally Free and Easy
Trees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sally, free and easy,
That should be her name,
Sally, free and easy,
That should be her name,
Took a sailor's loving,
For a nursery game.

Though the heart she gave me,
Was not made of stone, [Repeat: x2]
It was sweet and hollow,
Like a honey comb,

Think I'll wait till sunset,
See the ensign down, [Repeat: x2]
Then I'll take the tideway,
To my burying ground,

Sally, free and easy,
That should be her name, [Repeat: x2]

When my body's landed,
Hope she dies of shame.

Overall Meaning

The song Sally Free And Easy by the British folk group Trees is about a woman, Sally, who is described as being carefree and untroubled. The first two lines of the song imply that Sally's name should have been "free and easy" because it so perfectly captures her spirit. The next line references the fact that Sally took a sailor's love as if it were a game, a mere nursery game at that. This hints at the fact that Sally has a tendency to take relationships lightly and not take them seriously.

The lyrics then describe the nature of Sally's heart, saying that while it wasn't made of stone, it was sweet and hollow, like a honeycomb. This implies that while Sally may be sweet on the surface, there is not much depth to her, and her heart is not capable of love.

The final stanza reveals the singer's plan to wait until sunset and then take the "tideway" to their "burying ground." This suggests a suicidal intention, possibly due to heartbreak caused by Sally. The final lines reveal that the singer hopes Sally will feel shame when his body is discovered, implying that Sally was the cause of his heartache.

Overall, the song paints a vivid picture of a woman who is carefree and uncommitted to relationships, causing heartache in those who fall in love with her.

I discovered this band in about 2014, strangely after watching the original Wicker Man and going down the google rabbit hole and reading a recommendation on some prog folk message board. Im so glad i did. On the Shore has given me more listening pleasure than any other album since then.

Absolutely amazing vocals, slightly sinister, trippy guitars and electric psychedelic insturmnetal outros, great drumming, complex time signatures. Its an album i come back to time and again without ever getting bored.

This made me yearn for things that I was 50 years too late for. It made me feel humble, wanted, ecstatic and yet left out in the cold rain. I can taste English summer rain, and hear it splashing against my bedroom windows in the dead of night when I listen to this. An utterly beautiful song. I feel robbed that I've spent so long not knowing of it

Some of us were there at the time but didn't appreciate them properly (holds up hand shamefacedly)
