The band was formed in 1995 and all the songs on the debut album, Her handwriting (the title is a quote from Part company by The Go-Betweens) were recorded in Mitcham, south London, in December '95/ January '96, with long-time The Field Mice/Northern Picture Library producer Ian Catt, also known for his work as producer/arranger/co-songwriter for Saint Etienne. Released on Shinkansen Records (the label launched by Matt from Sarah Records) the album, which intimately details the break-up of a relationship, received universally good reviews.
Subsequent albums, Lips that taste of tears (1998) and Broken by whispers (2000), showed a band constantly improving their skills, combining their usual melancholy with transparent pop.
In 2001 the fourth album Alive to every smile appeared featuring a new line-up with many ex-Sarah Records band members in its ranks: Keris Howard from Brighter/Harper Lee, Beth Arzy from Aberdeen and Harvey Williams from Another Sunny Day/The Field Mice. Annemari Davies (ex-The Field Mice) also collaborated with the band. The album was very well received in Spain due to a release on Elefant Records (eventually TBS' main label) and in February 2002 the band visited Spain for the first time.
In 2003 A certain evening light was released, a compilation of singles and B-sides.
In 2004 the band left Shinkansen; The seven autumn flowers was released by Elefant Records worldwide.
In September 2005 Bobby Wratten announced that the band would no longer appear live. He had been uneasy about performing for some time, and had decided to concentrate on studio recordings instead. April 2007 saw the release of The Last Holy Writer.
2010 is expected to see the release of their new album, titled "Fast Trains And Telegraph Wires".
November Starlings
Trembling Blue Stars Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We're hungry for what's on the table
Under clouds that keep on changing
Hope returns and keeps returning
That trace of sunshine in the winter
That breeze when summer's at its highest
Part of the ride, of the adventure
You and I will journey together
We uncover
The dusk upon The Marsh
The stations of the cross
Rest your head on me and I'll catch you
Your head on me and I'll catch you
I'll catch you
This life that you and I are living
It's a scrapbook in the making
Flick to the howl of England's garden
Save a page for November starlings
Pinning down what we are feeling
Is something we'll never be awake to
Love does the hiding we the seeking
And there will never be a breakthrough
Undefined it will stay
A handful of snowflakes
Trying to tell you how much and how
Beyond squeezing your hand three times in a crowd
Rest your head on me and I'll catch you
Your head on me and I'll catch you
I'll catch you
The lyrics of Trembling Blue Stars' "November Starlings" is a captivating reflection of life's journey and the beauty that is present in the world around us. The song speaks to the yearning for adventure and life's experiences and the hope that keeps us moving forward.
The opening lines of the song are a powerful invitation to embrace the beauty of the world and all that it has to offer. The clouds that keep on changing may symbolize the continuous movement of life and its ever-changing circumstances. Hope is a recurring theme throughout the song, reminding us that in the darkest of times, there is always something to look forward to. The mention of sunshine breaking through in the winter and the cool breeze that comes during summer is a reminder to appreciate the small things in life, no matter how brief or fleeting they may be.
As the song progresses, we are invited to journey together in life's adventure, sharing in whatever comes our way. The lyrics speak to the importance of capturing life's experiences in a scrapbook like manner, taking the time to appreciate the moments that make up our lives. There is a softness in the line "rest your head on me and I'll catch you," offering a sense of comfort and security in the midst of all life's uncertainties.
The song concludes with the realization that the meaning of love is something that we may not fully understand. It is something that often hides from us, and despite our seeking, a breakthrough may never come. But, no matter how difficult life may be or how unclear our understanding of love, there is always someone there to catch us when we fall.
Overall, "November Starlings" is a heartfelt ode to the beauty and complexity of life, and a reminder to cherish each moment as it comes.
