Eyes Open
Trenches Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Eyes are open
A funeral waits for me
Embracing it
And some of us close our eyes up
Eyes are open
Because we’re afraid to see
To see
Darkness
Embrace it
Brace it
The lyrics of Trenches' song Eyes Open talks about facing death bravely and without any hesitation. The first line "Beyond the waking horizon" sets the tone for the entire song as the singer accepts death with eyes wide open. The second line, "Eyes are open" reinforces this idea, that the singer is fully aware of what's happening and they are not afraid. The third line, "A funeral waits for me" further confirms that the singer is ready for death and has accepted it fully. The fourth line, "Embracing it" is a powerful declaration of the singer's courage and strength as they embrace the inevitability of death.
The second verse talks about people who are afraid to face death and close their eyes to it. The line "And some of us close our eyes up" denotes the idea that not everyone is as brave as the singer and some people choose to hide from the unavoidable end. The repetition of "Eyes are open" shows the contrast between the two types of people; those who accept death with open eyes and those who choose to ignore it. The lines "Because we're afraid to see/To see" further underline the fear that grips people when they face the truth about their own mortality. The chorus that follows advocates the power of the darkness that comes with death, and it asks people to embrace it as a natural part of life.
