I had this EXACT feeling when I was first treated for my OCD. I remember right before I started treatment, sitting in my psychiatrist's office. This song is absolute genius. The skipping, consistent, distorted violins that make up the heart of the track represent the mind's ambivalent emotions when it realizes that something huge is in store like the idea of a perfect social network that has unspeakable potential. This is because the joy of having the idea conflicts with the anxiousness of getting it out there without encountering problems along the way. A violin is a beautiful instrument, but here it sounds spasmodic, as if it's distressed like a flowering tree sapling that's shaded and is trying to grow beyond the surrounding forestry. The indistinguishably happy or sad piano melody contributes to this idea, while the bass pulses serve as a reminder of the dangers of having an idea that's so valuable. I could go on, but this is my portrayal of this track. I see it this way because I for one can relate with this since I'm a music producer who's skeptical of audio theft. That's just one example, but there are many more in the case of Zuckerberg's because his idea is worth billions.

+Backless Chaps For me, it's exactly how the movie portrays it. Girl breaks up with you, you are depressed and bothered, but not so much to the point it turns you into an unmotivated sack of crap. Instead, it has the opposite effect and motivates you to push even harder to proving to her and others your worth (i.e. coming up with a multi-billion dollar idea). I do think in the movie though, he doesn't feel depressed, but moreso confused because he's so narcissistic that he can't believe someone would actually leave him. Ironically, Zuck in real life never had a breakup that motivated him in this way and instead is now married and about to have a child with the same girl he's been with since his days at Harvard. In my personal life though, I sometimes listen to it while doing my quarterly viewing of my ex's activities with her family...on Facebook nonetheless haha (we all have at some point don't lie). So it is almost in a way, a dark, sinister tune in that the motivation derives from the need to get revenge, but not so much on the person themselves, but by succeeding and showing them what they ended up missing out on.

This tune will always remind me of hard times at college. I had a programming project and I just wasn't able to do it. I always knew the basics of programming, but when it came to more complicated stuff or some bigger programs, I just didn't know what to do, and googling stuff just confused me more, as solutions were totally not understandable for me.

I remember when we had to give our ideas on how to write the program to our professor, so I gave one, but it turned out that it's way too simple and cannot be done this way. Professor started explaining me how I could do it. I was overwhelmed and his words started to go through my ears. It was too complicated for me. I just stared at the paper listening to him and watching him drawing something, but my mind went totally blank. I thought some words like "I'm fucked".

At home I tried to write the program but it was so damn hard for me. I remember listening to this tune, I remember even crying in a bathroom thinking about how shitty I was and how I shouldn't study at all. I felt bad, I thought things like "what am I doing there?" and that I am much more stupid than I think.

But this tune also reminds me a little bit of the come-back, of overcoming the hard times, of fighting with all the negative thoughts. I remember taking a little bit of advice on some programming forum. Some comments made me feel worse as they were too hard to understand, but some people turned out to be helpful and they knew I am new to this stuff. I slowly started making some progress. I remember getting drawn into this project, programming to 6 am. I had moments of motivation and moments of breakdown. I finally coded the program but there still was a small error I couldn't fix. A guy from forum helped me to solve this problem and I am thankful to him. I felt better after writing this program, I felt like I learnt a lot, and when I looked back then this program didn't seem to be that complicated. However, I wasn't fully satisfied, because I got some help from forums and I wasn't able to do it on my own.

Every time I hear this song I think about someone going through a huge transition in their life. A turning point if you will. The beginning starts out depressing, but I don't think it finishes that way at all. By the end I think that the music truly reflects the motivation for whatever goal that person is trying to reach on the horizon. A silver lining. A true beginning of something powerful.

I work as a security officer in an empty building (due to Covid) and when I play this song it makes me feel like I’m just doing my job patrolling and then I come to a sudden realization that everyone is dead and the building is destroyed in reality and I’ve gone crazy and have continued the job I had pre-destruction.

I think this is one of the greatest songs of all time. To this day I still remember my emotions watching the film and remembering my first time on Facebook. Mr. Zuckerberg is one of my favorite people. After he made Facebook I finally started to connect with my peers and was able to share my opinion without being bullied. Thanks.

I always love to come here when I'm doing a great transition in my life. Currently I've been working for over 10 years earning less than minimum wage, and finally I got a job offer with a decent salary. The long wait was totally worth it. I always think of a friend of mine when I listen to this song. He's not dead or anything, and we're still very close, but there was a time at the end of my senior year in high school when he'd pick me up from my house and we'd go to his place to watch movies, and The Social Network is his favorite, and it's become one of mine, too. I'm really grateful for him, because he's become one of my closest friends in awhile, and it's just very special to me to have experienced that with him.

This genuinely might be the best film score I've ever heard in my life. This came out in 2010 and Facebook has only become bigger, more ubiquitous, more scandalous and more controversial since then, which makes the looming sense of dread in this track seem almost prophetic. Utterly extraordinary.

Trent Reznor really did his thing on these movie soundtracks. He's so good about harmonizing different ambient noise in the background. Really unique style to his material.
