After their 1999 debut Anchor, the band released Different Stars in 2002. It caught the attention of Cocteau Twins bassist Simon Raymonde, who signed the band to his record label Bella Union, and re-released it with a new tracklisting. The band moved to Seattle to make their third album, 2006's Having. After the EPs Noble House (2007) and The Natural Order of Things (2009), the band entered a period of silence and ultimately disbanded owing to tensions between Williams and Brown. They reunited in 2020 to release the single "Winterstorms".
Anna-Lynne releases solo music under the name Lotte Kestner.

The first verse of Trespassers William's song "Weakening" talks about how time seems to be stretching out for the person. Moments that used to be brief flashes in their life, now seem to take up entire worlds in their hands. The second line talks about the person waking up, and it's unclear whether they're waking up to a good or bad situation because the next line talks about spells getting weaker as they take longer. It's possible that the person is waking up to find that their magic (or whatever their coping mechanism is) is wearing thin and no longer as effective.

The second verse of the song talks about the type of love that's stubborn and becomes a part of who you are. The person is looking for signs that this love is wearing away but is also expecting it to happen eventually. There's a sense of resignation in these lines that implies the person has been hurt before and has learned to brace themselves for the eventuality of being hurt again.
Overall, "Weakening" is a beautifully melancholic song about holding onto something that's slipping away. It's about the comfort of waiting for someone you love to show up, even if you know it won't make everything okay.
