He is credited by name as composer of 152 Phish originals, 140 of them as a solo credit, in addition to 41 credits attributed to the band in the generic. He was rated as number 73 on The Rolling Stone List of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003.

Throughout his career, Anastasio has participated in various projects outside of Phish, furthering his reputation as a multifaceted composer, instrumentalist, and vocalist. He continues to thrill fans with powerful live performances, and is by no means close to being finished.

This is definitely the best explanation of this solo I've seen so far. Sample In A Jar is the first Phish song I ever heard in May 2012 when I was looking up the bands that would be at Bonnaroo, I listened to the intro and said "they sound pretty good, I'll go see them on Sunday". They ended up playing this and several other tracks off of Hoist that night, making it a very memorable weekend. I think Trey bends to the G and B strings to get those country licks in on the studio version, which is kind of tricky but it looks really cool if you can get the bends in tune.

Stitch, yay! Thanks so much for putting this up! Very nice, emotional, backstory. Could see it meant a lot to you :) You know, my money was on that Trey used "blues/savory" method for several chords, and then "jazz/sweet" for others, kind of like your Little Wing video. Turns out it's jazz style all the way!

I have progressed a ton with your videos. At a minimum, I can play the root notes over each chord change, in the right scale. I can occasionally throw in some other notes in the scale. However, I have a hard time with creating rhythmic phrases to make it more interesting. Mine are very very basic. At the most it's like maybe moving from one note to the next, and throwing on a hammer on/pull off on the same string.

Now that you've shown us the light on how to think and approach the chord changes in these solos, what scale to use on top, and what target notes to hit, would you consider doing a video on how we can train ourselves to improve our ability to "sew them together" in an interesting way (create rhythmic phrases)?

Because the song does change key briefly if you are not going to play modally within that key or use arpeggios, you need to emphasize the non-harmonic notes to the main key (tonal center) within each chord to sound correct. I've never played through sample because it was never one of my favorite tunes, but I will play with it and give some more info if anyone is interested. I have a jazz background and I may get too technical but let me know and I'll do it. Great channel by the way, I love what your doing!!!!

I am so happy you finally did this lesson. When you announced it some hours ago, I checked out the song myself. I think Trey uses must of the time the pentatonic matching the underlying chord (like you most of the time, too) and inflects here and there with diatonic passing tones... and this tension building run in the middle. pretty close to your approach but changing the whole diatonic scale with every chord seems in my eyes/ears to busy because of the many changing tones from key to key. Pentatonics seem to glue everything better here and you mentioned them...

But I will take a closer look and check in detail what's going on there. 🤓

Hope you don't feel offended by my mild smartass criticisms in the last few videos! 🙈I know it just starts there and it is more to come. Just can't wait for more advanced stuff. LOVE IT, GOOD JOB! 👍

Great video! How do you know when to use a Major scale vs. a major pentatonic. For example If I was jamming to this song, how would I know whether I should be using an A major scale or an A major pentatonic scale? Thanks very much for any help.
