Rescue Me
Tribe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He knows how to make me feel tragedy
He's crafty
He senses many ways to quiet me
He's clever
Hurry up, hurry up he's calling
He's waiting for me down there
Hurry up, hurry up he's calling
He cannot wait to tell me
I will rescue you
He does not accept my reasoning
He's angry
He suspects his charms are failing him
He's anxious
Hurry up, hurry up he's calling
He's learned a perfect rhythm

Let me in, let me in he's sorry
He's sure I'll swoon when I hear him

Overall Meaning

In "Rescue Me", the lyrics describe a toxic relationship where one person has become emotionally dependent on another who is controlling and manipulative. The first verse sets the stage by establishing that this person knows just how to manipulate their partner, which is seen as a tragedy. However, they are also crafty, which suggests that their tactics may not be immediately apparent to the partner. The second verse continues this theme, with the controlling partner being angry and anxious when their tactics do not work. The repetition of "Hurry up, hurry up he's calling" creates a sense of urgency and anxiety, which amplifies the tension in this relationship.

In the chorus, the controlling partner asserts that they will "rescue" their partner, even though they are the ones causing the harm. This creates a sense of cognitive dissonance, as the partner may feel torn between their dependence on the abuser and their desire to break free. The final line of the chorus, "He's sure I'll swoon when I hear him", underscores this dynamic - the abuser is confident that they can control their partner's emotions.

Overall, "Rescue Me" is a powerful exploration of the dynamics of an abusive relationship. The lyrics capture the complexity of emotion involved, from love to fear to dependence to resentment.

Sheer perfection. One of the most beautiful songs ever made. An amazingly underrated band that deserved success but, as always, were ignored by the masses.

David Farrell

To this day I have no idea why they weren't huge. Great musicans, songwriting and as charismatic a frontwoman as I've ever seen. Blame it on their label rep.

Nofer Trunions

I heard them for the first time when they opened for The Psychedelic Furs at The Metropol in Pittsburgh. At first we weren't paying too much attention to them, Teri was begging people to dance - it was so sad. By the end of the set, I was literally mesmerized by their music which I call transcendental - they wrote songs that built massive amounts of energy in just a few minutes - NO ONE does that! Hooked line and sinker. Abort was LAST album I ever listened to over and over again. I was 40 years old then.

Resolution

I practiced and practiced until I could get the chords down to this song. Eric Brosius has a sound of his own.

SoilentGr33n

The chords sound like a vinyl record with a problematic motor and I love it. Almost has a Boards of Canada vibe to the instrumentals.
