Red Red Wine
Tribe Tony Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Red, red wine
Go to my head
Make me forget that I
Still need her so

Red, red wine
It's up to you
All I can do, Ive done
But memories won't go
No, memories won't go

I'd have sworn
That with time
Thoughts of you
Would leave my head

I was wrong
And I find
Just one thing
Makes me forget

Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don't let me be alone

It's tearing apart
My blue, blue heart

Overall Meaning

In Tribe Tony's song Red Red Wine, the lyrics describe the power of red wine in helping someone forget about a past love. The wine takes over their mind and helps them escape the pain of still needing the person they've lost. The repetition of "red, red wine" throughout the song emphasizes the strong hold it has over the singer.

The first verse highlights the singer's struggle with remembering their past love despite their efforts to move on. The wine comes in as a relief, making them forget about their heartache, even if only temporarily. In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that they were wrong in thinking that time would heal their wounds. The only thing that helps them forget is the warm embrace of red wine.

The chorus is a plea to the wine to stay close and not let the singer be alone. The blue heart reference alludes to the feeling of sadness and depression that comes with missing someone deeply. Overall, the song is a reflection on the pain of heartbreak and the coping mechanisms that people use to ease their pain.

Red, red wine,
Goes to my head..
Makes me forget that I,
Still need her so..

Red, red wine,
It's up to you..
All I can do, I've done.
Memories won't go;
Memories won't go..

I have sworn, that with time,
Thoughts of you would leave my head.
I was wrong, and I find,
Just one thing makes me, forget.

Red, red wine,
Stay close to me.
Don't let me be alone,
It's tearin' apart..
My blue, blue heart.

(..)

I have sworn, that with time,
Thoughts of you would leave my head.
I was wrong, and I find,
Just one thing makes me, forget.

Red, red wine,
Stay close to me.
Don't let me be alone,
It's tearin' apart

More Time Needed

This record reached number 46 in the U.K. pop charts on 22.07.1969. Reggae specialist shops in London and Birmingham (and other cities) were selling this by the boxload but these weren’t counted when compiling the charts.

Thank you, Tony Tribe, thank you ska, thank you Jamaica and all who brought this music to my sore ears. Such an uplifting of my downtrodden spirit. Ahhhhh. I know much of this music was reaction to oppression. But only one tactic will run the oppressors out of town - when the masses unify and tell them "NO MORE!" They always divide their targets before conquering. So, remember who the real enemy is. It is NOT your neighbor, even if they don't act or look like you.
