Aftermath
Tricky Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For once, there's someone for he, for she
For once, there's someone for he, for me

Your eyes resemble mine, you see as no others can
Here inherit my kingdom, speak of our (my) people's plans
I'll be here for my baby, for my baby I'll be here (near)
So many things I need to tell you, things you need to hear
So this is the aftermath

Your eyes resemble mine, you see as no others can
Here inherit my kingdom, speak of our people's plans
I'll be here for my baby, for my baby I'll be near
So many things I need to tell you

For once, there's someone for he, for she
For once, there's someone for he, for me

Let me tell you about my mother

For once, there's someone for he, for she
For once, there's someone for he, for me

Your eyes resemble mine, you see as no others can
Here inherit my kingdom, speak of our people's plans
I'll be here for my baby, for my baby I'll be near
So many things (that) I need to tell you, things you need to hear

How can I be sure?
In a world that's constantly changing
How can I be sure?

How can I be sure?
In a world that's constantly changing
How can I be sure?

Just when I thought I was winning
Just when I thought I could not be stopped
Just when I thought I was winning

Just when I thought I could not be stopped
How can I be sure?

Overall Meaning

Tricky's song "Aftermath" evokes feelings of love, devotion, and uncertainty. The song appears to be from the point of view of a father who is acknowledging the inevitable cycle of life, as he passes his kingdom to his child. The first and second verses repeat a sentiment of finding someone for him and for his child, suggesting that he has found a partner whom he hopes will be a source of support for their family. The lines "your eyes resemble mine, you see as no others can" signify a sense of connection and understanding that he feels with this partner.

The father speaks of his desire to pass down his "kingdom" to his child and for his partner to speak of "our people's plans." This suggests that the father sees his family as a community and that he and his partner see their role as not only as a couple, but also as leaders and caretakers of their family. He acknowledges that there are still so many things he needs to tell his child and his partner, emphasizing the importance of open communication in their relationships.

The repetition of the line "how can I be sure?" at the end of the song suggests that the father is grappling with feelings of uncertainty, perhaps about his own mortality or the challenges that his child will face in their future. This line can also be interpreted as a broader commentary on the transitory nature of life and the difficulty of feeling secure in a constantly changing world.

Overall, "Aftermath" is a poignant and introspective look at family, love, and the struggle to find certainty in the face of uncertainty.

Tricky is a titan of Trip Hop. Trip Hop in general is such a wonderful genre.

Production on this track is light years ahead.

Ah, that moment in the mid-'90s, when I simultaneously discovered Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead, Autechre, The Orb, Orbital, Aphex Twin, U-ziq, Meat Beat Manifesto, Mouse on Mars and Ultramarine. Too good to believe. Now years can pass without any interesting, not to mention electrifying music.
