I Live For The Weekend
Triumph Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Makin' my way to the job each day
Slave like a dog for my hard-earned pay
When the bell rings I'm ready to run
Gonna get high, gonna have some fun
I know the boss, he don't think I'm good
Baby I'm just badly misunderstood
Cause you know what I like
[Chorus]
I live, I live, I live for the weekend
I live, I live, I live for the weekend

Ya know ya gotta serve
Ya know ya gotta please
My baby puts my mind at ease
Friday comes 'n' I'm thinkin' of you
Cause at five o'clock, they're gonna set me loose
Come on, babe, we're gonna live it up
Don't ya know that
I can't get enough
Of your sweet love

[Chorus]

I know, babe, you don't think I'm good
But, you got me badly understood
An' I know what I like

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

Triumph's song "I Live For The Weekend" paints a picture of the mundanity of everyday work life, but also the excitement of the weekends. The first stanza describes the daily grind of work, where the singer is treated like a "slave" for his "hard-earned pay." However, at the sound of the bell, he is ready to run and have some fun. Despite his boss's negative opinion of him, he feels misunderstood because his desire is to live for the weekends.

The chorus emphasizes the singer's love for the weekend and his desire to break free from the workweek's monotony. He eagerly awaits the weekend to arrive, as it offers him an opportunity to be with his lover and enjoy life without any responsibilities. His fondness for his partner is evident in the line "my baby puts my mind at ease." In the final stanza, the singer again acknowledges his partner's negative mindset regarding him, but he knows what he likes, and his love for the weekend is unwavering.

Overall, "I Live For The Weekend" is about the desire to escape the dullness of life and find happiness in moments of freedom. The song is a celebration of personal choice and emphasizes the importance of enjoying life, even if it's just for a few days on the weekends.

This could be the best ever rock tune. rock guitar, killer leads, working man lyrics and most of all-the louder you play it the better it sounds. Try to find a transcription of this one.

@Vince Nicole Copy that, buddy. W/all due respect 2 Rik Emmitt Triumph's BEST FUCKIN' SONGS r when Gil Moore does lead vocals.

Daryle Cosgrove

My favourite Triumph song. Surprised that it doesn't get more chatter. Oh well, that's life.

B.J. Banditt

Likewise here. W/all due respect 2 Rik Emmett, Triumph's best songs r w/Gil Moore on lead vocals (e.g.: this song, "Spellbound", & "Tears In The Rain"). The manner in how Gil Moore carries a tune's vastly underr8d.

Joe Nickell

@B.J. BandittRik Emmett's vocals are waaay better than Moore

John P

As a kid in the 80's, as a teenager, I would listen to his album in a plain as it was going down the runway as I was off to visit relatives. It really got the blood flowing! Ultimately, it was an underrated album in Triumphs discography, personally though, I loved this one.
