In the middle of the night
Triumph Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Two broken people can never go back
They blame each other for the things that they lack
They have no concept of the danger they´re in
There´s no accounting for the wages of sin

You say that love is holding you down
I watch you walkin´ away
I look for something that could turn this around
There´s nothin´ I can say

CHORUS:
in the middle of the night...I´m calling
Can you hear me whisper your name
In the dying of the light...I´m falling
But it feels like the morning may never be coming again
Never again, never again

Under the table, under the gun
Under the influence of what
We´ve become
Heavy consequences for the things that we´ve done
We should have learned to walk before we started to run
whatever happened to the love that we had? I feel it
Slippin´ away
It started good but now it´s ending so bad...look at the
Price we pay

CHORUS

Too many people they walk in their sleep
Steppin´ on the promises that they ought to keep
Anaesthetic people, they dance in a dream, but
Things are never quite as simple as they seem
You´re keepin´ all your secrets inside you
They´re gonna tear you apart
Let me come and lay down beside you
Open up your heart

CHORUS

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Triumph's song "In The Middle Of The Night" convey a sense of desperation and regret for a failed relationship. The song talks about two broken people who are blaming each other for their shortcomings, unable to realize the danger they are in. The lyrics express the frustration of the singer, who is witnessing his partner walking away from him, with nothing he can do to stop it or turn things around. The chorus highlights the sense of loneliness and despair that the singer is feeling, calling out to his partner in the middle of the night, hoping to bridge the emotional distance that has grown between them, but fearing that the morning may never come again.

The song's lyrics suggest that the couple's relationship started out well but quickly spiraled into a path of self-destruction, with both parties engaging in reckless behavior and facing the consequences. As the song progresses, it becomes evident that the singer is trying to reach out to his partner, to no avail, as they have kept their secrets hidden away, leading to their inevitable separation. The song's lyrics imply that the singer is still in love with his partner, even though the relationship has failed, and he is hoping for reconciliation.

I must say I have been following Triumph since the late 70's, their music has heart. Rick Emmett, we are older now, but your music has aways and still touches my heart..... Never surrender ..

BeBean99

This one and Killing Time takes me back to a more simple, yet heartbreaking, time. These two got me through it, tho. Great lyrics, special songs.

Colt Cutback

Just an unreal band.... So much of this relates to the band itself! Saw these guys several times. God damn they were good!

Tom Hawkins

Very underappreciated and under rated band, styles range from straight blues ,power pop and ballads and pure shred fests

gremlinjr2

100% agreed ! .. Better than RUSH .. hands down ! .. In Rush No one can Sing .. Triumph ALL of them can sing ! .. ;) Hahahah

BryanFink1

@gremlinjr2 Triumph was a good band with a great Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist in Rik Emmett. He should've always been the focal point of the band because he was most of their talent and strength. But to dis Rush is ignorance! Geddy has a very unique voice is also a master bass player and great song arranger. Neil is arguably one of the best ever rock drummers and lyricists and Alex Lifeson is a hugely underrated and under appreciated guitarist. Gil Moore and Mike Levine are average at best.
