During its early years, Triumvirat initially played Top 40 songs at local venues in Cologne. The Nice and Emerson, Lake & Palmer heavily influenced Triumvirat’s musical direction and the band incorporated some of Nice/ELP music into their repertoire (Rondo among others).
In the early 1970s, the band sent a demo tape to EMI Records in Cologne and won their first record contract. Triumvirat subsequently produced modestly successful albums during the early to mid-1970s, including Mediterranean Tales (Across The Waters) and Illusions on a Double Dimple, and toured the United States with Fleetwood Mac to support Illusions on a Double Dimple, playing the album in its entirety. In 1975, Triumvirat reached the apex of their commercial success with the release of Spartacus.
The band underwent numerous personnel changes over the course of its life and eventually disbanded in 1980 with the release of their final album Russian Roulette.

The lyrics to Triumvirat's song Broken Mirror seem to describe a futile pursuit of love from someone who is not reciprocating. The singer listens to the footstep of the person they are interested in, hoping for some indication that they may want them too, but they receive no such signal. The singer even goes to a party where this person is and catches a glimpse of them through the door but is left wanting more. It seems as though the person cannot see beyond their own self-interest and the singer is left without any reciprocation. Even though the singer wants to offer more and show the person how much they care, there is no interest on the other side. The final stanza seems to offer some solace in the idea of pursuing one's passions and achieving something great, but it also highlights the struggle of trying to break free from the constraints of the world and others' expectations. In this way, the lyrics reflect the universal theme of unrequited love and the desire for something more.
