life as you know it doesn't turn out the well

Overall Meaning

In this song, Troy reflects on memories and experiences with a past love. The scent of a burning fire triggers memories of the person he used to love, and reminds him of everything that reminds him of his past partner. He then sings about how his former partner had accused him of cheating, and how he wishes he had done it just so they would have something to talk about. This emotion-laden verse underscores the turmoil and complicated emotions that often come with a break-up.

The chorus repeats the phrase "they used to call me the lucky one," adding emphasis to how things have changed for Troy since their break-up. The repetition of this phrase almost sounds like a lamentation, with Troy expressing regret about the way that things have ended up. He follows that up by bemoaning the way life turns out for people - expressing what feels like a sense of disappointment and loss.

In the final verse, Troy reflects on letting his former partner in on his life, before hinting that his partner had destroyed what was meant to be a bright future. The song's repetition of the chorus helps to underscore how Troy has lost the feeling of being "lucky" - it's almost as if he's resigned to the fact that things aren't going to turn out in his favor anymore.
