Easy
Troye Sivan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You ran away to find something to say
I went astray to make it okay and he made it
Easy, darlin'
I'm still in love and I say that because
I know how it seems between you and me
It hasn't been easy, darlin'

I can't even look at you
Would you look at the space just next to your feet
The wood is warping
The lines distorting
This house is on fire, woo
Burning the tears right off my face
What the hell did we do?
Tell me we'll make it through

'Cause he made it easy, easy
Please don't leave me
Leave me

What's left of the dance
That's all on my hands
The rock in my throat, a hair on my coat
The stranger at home, my darling
Like some kind of freak, my darling
Now I'm vulnerable, so sad and alone
But don't cry for me, 'cause everyone knows
You reap what you sow, my darling
Yeah, yeah, yeah

I can't even look at you
Would you look at the space just next to your feet?
The wood is warping
The lines distorting, yeah
This house is on fire, woo
Burning the tears right off my face
What the hell did we do?
Tell me, we'll make it through

'Cause he made it easy
Easy
Please don't leave me
Don't leave me

(He made it easy, please don't leave me)
(He made it easy, please don't leave me)

I can't even look at you
Would you look at the space just next to your feet?
The wood is warping
The lines distorting
This house is on fire, woo
Burning the tears right off my face
What the hell did we do?
Tell me, we'll make it through

'Cause he made it easy
Easy
Please don't leave me, no
Don't leave me

(He made it easy, please don't leave me)
(He made it easy, please don't leave me)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Troye Sivan's song Easy describe a difficult and emotional breakup. The relationship has been strained and the singer has gone astray to try and make things right. However, their partner has found it easier to move on and has left them feeling vulnerable and alone. The lyrics suggest that the breakup was not easy for the singer and that they are still in love with their partner. The pain is evident in the repeated plea to not be left alone.

The lyrics are filled with powerful imagery that adds to the emotional intensity of the song. The warped wood and distorted lines of the house suggest a sense of decay and destruction, while the tears that are burned off the singer's face by the fire show the destructive power of the relationship. The rock in the throat and hair on the coat add physicality to the pain that the singer feels. The repeated refrain of "he made it easy" highlights the contrast between the way the breakup has affected the two partners. For the singer, it is difficult and painful, while for their partner, it has been easier.

Overall, the lyrics of Easy are a powerful evocation of the pain and anguish of a difficult breakup. The imagery and emotional intensity of the song provide a vivid and moving portrait of a relationship in crisis.

In the lyrics to the song, we find Troye Sivan lamenting over a love long gone, but not from his memory. The singer had to walk away from his relationship due to his partner walking away to find “freedom.” The singer was forced to move on… forced into someone else’s hands.

Verse 1

The song starts off with the line that kicks off the snowball effect for the song. The singer’s partner leaving him behind to find something more “stable.” In response, the singer went “astray,” meaning he wandered away onto different motives. The singer says he found comfort in another man during this time and his pain from the ealier breakup was somewhat relieved through this.

But, of course, Troye is not over his love yet.

Chorus

In the chorus, it seems that the singer’s lover has returned to their house. Troye Sivan cannot look into his eyes. It could be mostly because of the guilt from Sivan’s side due to his secret affair. Maybe the former lover walked in on them at their house.

Troye is shedding tears of lava, burning through the wooden floor of the house. It’s the pain inside of his heart pouring out in the form of tears.

Post-chorus

In these lyrics, Troye is hear sobbing and begging his lover to stay with him.

Verse 2

In the second verse, we hear Troye Sivan still getting beaten over the guilt of his “astray” journey. And our suspicion above is cleared when Troye sings “The stranger at home, my darling.” Troye’s lover walked in on Troye and his fling. The singer is utterly shocked, unable to muster any strength to speak a word to his lover. Troye’s only explanation for his unfaithfulness is that “he made it easy” while he was gone!

@strawberrymilkk3116

let's have a lyric discussion
as another comment stated the lyrics, "the wood is warping, the lines distorting," that's what happens when a fire breaks out. now going off of that, assuming he's singing about jacob, in the beginning, he says "i'm still in love, and I say that because I know how it seems between you and me, it hasn't been easy darling." jacob probably feels unloved by troye and is trying to tell him he knows he messed up, but he still loves him.
the house is a metaphor for their relationship, and it's rapidly decaying because of the fire that broke out. where jacob stands, that's where the wood is warping, and lines are distorting. it's like he's burning out, he's fading away from his life. he wants to know if they'll make it through this tragedy bc he doesn't want him to leave..
pleaaaase don't bash me for my words, I'm sorry.. this is just how I analyzed the chorus, but tell me what you understood ~

i'd like to edit this to add another one of my opinions !
in the first verse, troye says, "you ran away to find something to say. i went astray to make it ok, and he made it easy, darling."
i don't know what he means by the first line, but i'll speak from my perspective. it sounds like they got in a fight, and jacob barged out to be away from troye. he probably went to hang with some friends and ended up talking behind his back, and that's what is meant by 'to find something to say.'
in the second line, i think troye is addressing his scandal, and it sounds like he's admitting he cheated. he felt so alone with jacob gone, so he went astray to make it ok, probably got drunk and found someone that made him feel at ease.. and he made it easy, darling

@sev873

an arguably over-complicated and prolly unnecessary analysis
- notice how the shots from always emphasize the space around him? even when he is the center of the shot, it's at an angle to show how much more empty space there is behind him and around him, emphasizing how alone he
- this is furthered: the many chairs when he sits alone with the over the shoulder shot, which is usually used in filming a conversation or a moment between two people -- however, in this case, it shows that something (in this context, his partner) is strangely missing. also, when he lies in bed, he clearly is on one side, with another pillow beside him and enough space for another person
- at 1:12 the silhouette of another person is beside him jus as he switches on the television (someone is with him when he symbolically switches to his other identity on the screen)
- no furniture, no evidence of this house being lived in, very sterile and clean -- this is a house, not a home
- so so much water/pools. is this cleansing or suffocating? water can be both
- obvious color symbolism; contrast between the blue (very suffocating, very sad) and red (a regaining of identity, passion)
- red is mostly associated with his other persona, the one with bright yellow makeup and a campy 80s performance persona -- the performance aspect of it is emphasized, this is the only time people appear in the mv, and there is theatrical, showy lighting, and its shown through a television -- the pop star is clearly performing, putting on a persona
- suggests that troye is still stuck in the blue, not yet into the red yet
- when mirror (often a symbol of illusion) shatters, red blood is shown (+ at this point he dances more expressively and freely in his blue persona than he's able to any other time)
- gazes longingly into the red fire
- red fire sets him on fire as well
- the lighting on him is red after he jumps into a pool and puts out the fire too
- does this symbolize two different kinds of passions? or two extremes of identity or emotion? fire vs water are fundamental opposites, but he is in some way mixed w red regardless in both cases
- anyway. troye is a genius and i want more concepts and mvs directed by him please and thank you for coming to my ted talk

@lacrangmuoimuonnam

Ok so here is my breakdown of the MV:

Water is a symbol for emotions. The large bodies of water, which constantly appeared in almost every scene before red haired Troye, refers to his love for his partner. Water is there everywhere in the house and outside, taking the majority of the space, yet it is cold, still water, and Troye never touches it. It basically means that although the love is there, there is a certain disconnection between Troye and his feelings for his partner (and/or vice versa), which might stem from physical distance or a temporary break.

The shadows also indicate the same thing. At 0:29 and 1:12, there is a shadow of someone in the room with Troye, but in the next scenes there is no sign of them. It can mean that that person is there physically but feels like just a shadow, or is not there physically next to Troye. Either way, this conveys a certain kind of distance, either emotionally or physically, or both.

The only scenes before red haired Troye where the water isn't shown were when he is shown with a glass of alcohol. Alcohol is technically a liquid (water) but it is actually fire based on its characteristics. Alcohol enhances fire. We can see how in the first scene with the glass of alcohol (0:30), Troye seems to be tempted but is simply looking at it.

Now, at the first hanging mirror scene (0:50), you can see Troye drinking for the first time. This implies that he is taking a small step towards the "fire", maybe a late night conversation on the phone with another person. In the same scene, you can indirectly see the fireplace flickering on the wall next to Troye. After sipping the alcohol (fiery liquid), Troye now starts to look at the actual burning fire. Still, he is just looking from afar, with a mirror hanging over his head. The mirror, according the fengshui, is the element water (both colourless, clear, and reflective). Again, water. This is basically their love, literally hanging by a thread. You get the idea.

From 1:50, the wall looks like it is starting to melt (lines distorting), yet you don't see the fire at all, implying that the fire is only indirectly melting the house down. The mirror starts swaying too. This can be understood as even though nothing has really happened between Troye and the fire guy, Troye's partner still gets jealous and thus the house and mirror (their relationship and love) start to be affected. It keeps continuing (the melting and swaying), till the point that the mirror falls, break into pieces, and hurts Troye (2:12). This indicates a breakup.

In the next scenes, we see Troye bleeding because of the mirror pieces (the fights, the shattered state of their feelings for each other, and the break up itself), him dancing in a seemingly intoxicated state (may refers to his current chaotic state of mind, or actual intoxication), and him getting close to the fireplace and look straight into it, tempted to touch.

At 2:50, Troye is literally on fire, but he looks numb and empty, not reacting to the fire. It means Troye finally lets his feelings for this man grow rather than avoiding it, maybe even got together with the fire guy, but he does not feel much. Troye realizes he is still surrounded by water (means that his feelings for his ex remain), so he decides to fall into the pool, making contact with water for the first time (except when the mirror hurts him). Fire is, obviously, out. This time, he completely immerses himself in water.

This, for me, is like when you go through a painful breakup, then get together with the next person in line, only to realize you are not yet over your past relationship. Falling into water here does not necessarily means the two got back together, but it means Troye finally could truly connect to his love for his ex again. He finally understands how grand and special it was, and how it could not be so easily replaced. He simply lets himself feel that love again, and beg his love not to leave him.

(This next part I am not as certain)
As for red hair Troye and the white rabbit, this seems to me that they are references to the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland (I know Troye does not wear a hat here, but his hair colour, makeup, clothings, and facial expressions very much resemble the fictional character). In the original story, the Mad Hatter got sentenced to death by the Queen of Hearts for "murdering the time" (he drinks tea to kill time lol). I think the underlying implication of this image is that Mad Hatter Troye got accused by his lover (Queen of Hearts) of having not spent enough quality time together (murder the time). The white rabbit is also a time-related reference. White Rabbit is always running late. I feel like this may be how Troye feels, always running and trying to do what he is supposed to, or to fix things, but is always too late, which eventually leads to the final breakdown.

On a side note, the song itself may or may not imply cheating. In case it is about cheating, it might be Troye's personal experience (which is none of our business) or inspired by another person's story. However, it may simply mean that the appearance of "He" in Troye's life (as a source of temptation/distraction without any kind of cheating occuring) made it easy for the break up to happen, because the relationship was already going south.

I went astray to make it okay
And he made it easy, darlin'
I'm still in love, and I say that because

[Verse 2]
What's left of the dance?
The smell on my hands
The rock in my throat, a hair on my coat
The stranger at home, my darling
Like some kind of freak, my darling
Now I'm vulnerable, so sad and alone
But don't cry for me, 'cause everyone knows
You reap what you sow, my darling
Yeah, yeah, yeah

I can't even look at you
Would you look at the space just next to your feet?

Troye wrote the lyrics and melody, directed the video and acted on it himself. No disrespect to his team but Troye really should consider doing this more often. It's just so beautiful to see an artist taking absolute control of his art. Breathtaking!
