Tip of My Tongue
Tubes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You somehow knew we'd meet again.
Now I understand.
If I look surprised don't be alarmed,
I've got you, in my arms.
I can almost taste it, and when I can,
(I won't waste the chance).
Just a lick away,
(Oh so close)
And baby there's one thing I know...

My heart speaks but the words play
On the tip of my tongue...
And no matter
What my lips say, you are still the only one.

Never been too cunning, I'm no linguist,
But I can tell you this
Ever since I left you I've been lost,
I'm walking in a fog.
We can lick this problem;
We can work it out.
Don't be impatient, and don't you run,
'Cause I want you on the tip of my...
I can't find the words.
My lips are on their own,
And my speech is slurred...
Can't even talk on the telephone.
I'll take a tip from you.
You say my french is pretty good,

So that's what I'll use...
If I could!

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Tubes's song Tip of My Tongue are about meeting someone again and feeling surprised. The lyrics continue with the singer holding the person in their arms, almost being able to taste something. The singer mentions that they won't waste the chance and that they are so close to this person. The chorus then starts with the line "My heart speaks but the words play on the tip of my tongue." The singer admits they're not too cunning with language and that every since they left this person, they've been lost and walking in a fog. They want to work it out and hope that this person won't be impatient or run away. But the singer can't find the words and their speech is slurred, unable to even talk on the telephone. They'll take a tip from this person and speak French, if only they could.

The song seems to be about a person who has a lot of emotions for someone they are with or have met again. They want to express how they feel but cannot seem to find the right words. The lyrics show that the person is willing to try anything to express how they feel, even if that means using another language. The song speaks to the fear of not being able to communicate effectively and the potential loss that can cause. The last line of the song lyrics implies that the singer may not get the chance to express their emotions if they do not try and speak up.
