Natal Day
Tulus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Benighted scene by the darkened lake,
In the gloomfull, dispiriting black.
Born from a mother not awake,
Blood is the solitary track.

Knifelike rain in cuttings wind,
Lashed against a dying mother's face.
The owls sighed, the reaper grinned,
Human scent, so easily traced.

Harvester of the dead,
Inescapably led
To her inalterable bed.

Left on the soaked moss, her male child,
Attracting the creatures of the woods,
Some in fury, some beguiled,
Greed gave triumph to the wolf.

Taken to the damp and noisome lair,
Fed on the flesh from his mater.
Sleeping and waking, unaware,
Evermore faithful, but a traitor

Cold, appalled, awaken,

Never meant to be taken
By the harvester of the forsaken.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tulus's song Natal Day describe a bleak and ominous scene beside a darkened lake. The singer describes the birth of a child, whose mother is not conscious to witness the arrival of her offspring. The use of blood as a solitary track seems to indicate that this birth is unnatural or perhaps even dangerous. The child is left beside the lake, and we see the impact of the harsh elements on the mother and her offspring with knifelike rain being lashed against her face.

As the child is left on the moss, they attract the creatures of the woods, who are all competing to consume the child. It's highlighted that some animals are driven by fury, while others are beguiled by the helpless infant. The imagery of the wolf triumphing through greed seems to be a metaphor for the harsh reality of life and the struggle for survival.

Throughout the song, we also encounter the harvester of the dead, who appears to embody death itself. The reference to the harvester being inescapably led to their inalterable bed is a reminder that death is inevitable and inescapable. In the final verse, we see the child growing up in the wilderness, eating the flesh of their mater, and unknowingly becoming a traitor. The song is a powerful reflection on the harshness of life and the finality of death.
