Tumi and the Volume are made up of four members. Tumi Molekane (vocals), the centerpiece of the group, is an accomplished South African poet from Johannesburg. In 2002, he met Tiago and Paulo Chibanga and Dave Bergman, who were playing backup for MCs at the Bassline, in Melville, Johannesburg. Tiago and Paulo are both members of the Mozambiquean, South African-based band 340ml. For the production of their first album, At the Bassline the group added Kyle Rose Smith, a violinist, to complete The Volume. On their second album, the self-titled studio release, Smith is featured but she left the band in early 2005 to join Freshlyground.
Tumi and the Volume was founded when then-solo emcee Tumi Molekane met The Volume, a backup band at the Bassline. The first collaborative project, which evolved into At the Bassline, began in the beginning of 2003. Yet since before the release of their first album, Tumi and the Volume have been performing across southern Africa and Europe.
Their first year together, 2002, saw them mostly tour South Africa and contribute to music festivals across the country, as well as open for bigger international groups performing in Johannesburg and Cape Town, such as Positive Black Soul, from Senegal, and Blackalicious, from the United States.
The release, and following critical acclaim of, At the Bassline, shot them onto a bigger stage, as the group performed at the Quart Festival in Norway, alongside with The Roots and Coldplay.
2005 through 2006 saw the successive releases of their second album--and first studio album--Tumi & the Volume, in first South Africa, and then Europe and North America. Through June and July of 2006, the band traveled to Canada and performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival.
In August of 2006, their first album was re-released on Apple iTunes Music Store.

I hope and trust you wouldn’t lie to me
The glow in us could and might just be
Cause you shed a little light for me to see
I hope and trust you wouldn’t lie to me
The glow in us could and might just be (Okay ay yo)
Forests lose acres for me to carry solo newspapers
Leave it to God if I know I’ll get at you later
Malcontent like Malcolm X a last crusader
Chill out like the energy the afternoon’s made of
Take a long walk in the park and pass a few neighbours
But the attitude make this feel like you haters
Can’t look me in the eye staring down my shoelaces
I reside from the same God that made you screw faces
The same God Buddhist Hindus and Jews praise kid
But you tighten grips on your suitcases
I let it slide cause I just don’t do hatred
But the very same thing happens after a few paces
The irony of life enters my new phrases
It can’t be too late kid for the times you wasted
I concentrate on mine giving minds a new facelift
We too sacred to make minor feuds break us
Chill at the spot where the baselines are blues take us
And rhyme to flutes played with infallible patience
Yo I’m using art to invite the true ancient
Cause it don’t take a rocket scientist to get to the moon
Every man and woman got their own ten minute zoom
People of the light generate a glow in the room
I hear the wind whisper love I’ll be coming home soon
Cause it don’t take a rocket scientist to get to the moon
Every man and woman got their own ten minute zoom
People of the light generate a glow in the room
I hear the wind whisper love I’ll be coming home soon
You shed a little light for me to see
I hope and trust you wouldn’t lie to me
The glow in us could and might just be
Ayo sooner than you thought we’ll be floating out
Taking lunar walks outshining
Stars with the light seen through the fog
But for now we still learning what it means to be poor
Children’s screams blew the war like scenes of before
Political rallies with bullets speed to your core
Blood sweeps through the floor red sheets in the morgue
A widow willow weeps to the streets in the raw
Like when will it cease when will peace reach us all
Fast forward to the present and the beast that’s still at call
Change your face and name at least you spoken for
This is the same oppression my peeps can ill afford
Privatised basic health water and minerals
Analyse ancient change and slaughters on the news
But my people still generate a glow in the room
I hear the wind whisper love I’ll be coming home soon
But people of the light still generate a glow in the room
Cause it don’t take a rocket scientist to get to the moon
Every man and woman got their own ten minute zoom
People of the light generate a glow in the room
I hear the wind whisper love I’ll be coming home soon
Cause it don’t take a rocket scientist to get to the moon
Every man and woman got their own ten minute zoom
People of the light generate a glow in the room
I hear the wind whisper love I’ll be coming home soon
You shed a little light for me to see
I hope and trust you wouldn’t lie to me
The glow in us could and might just be
Cause you shed a little light for me to see
I hope and trust you wouldn’t lie to me
The glow in us could and might just be
It don’t take no rocket scientist to get me to the moon
Every man and woman’s got their own ten minute zoom
Zoom zoom zoom zoom (Hear me out y’all)
Cause It don’t take a rocket scientist to get me to the moon
Every man and woman got their own ten minute zoom
People of the light generate a glow in the room
I hear the wind whisper love I’ll be coming home soon
Cause It don’t take a rocket scientist to get me to the moon
Every man and woman got their own ten minute zoom
People of the light generate a glow in the room
I hear the wind whisper love (I’ll be coming home soon)
Every man and woman got their own ten minute zoom
People of the light generate a glow in the room
I hear the wind whisper love I’ll be coming home soon
Thank you very much
Introducing the band (Outro)
In "People of the Light," Tumi and the Volume discuss the concept of light, specifically how it illuminates and brings clarity to our lives. The song’s title refers to "people of the light," who are individuals that radiate positivity and hope to those around them. The opening lines of the song state: "You shed a little light for me to see / I hope and trust you wouldn’t lie to me / The glow in us could and might just be / Cause you shed a little light for me to see / I hope and trust you wouldn’t lie to me / The glow in us could and might just be". The lyrics go on to tackle issues such as war and oppression, while still emphasizing the power of positivity and hope to overcome these challenges.
The song highlights the importance of having people in our lives who show us a better way, as well as the role that each individual has in shaping the world around them. The lyrics also bring to light the struggles people face in their day-to-day lives, such as poverty and health issues. However, by maintaining a positive outlook and coming together as a community, people can continue to generate "a glow in the room" and overcome any obstacles.
