Lights
Tundra Max Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to drive for a living, hairy arms fed the wheel thorough my palms
Twitching feet made patterns on pedals, reflexes honed in a twice-failed test
The pay man Lance kept me elastic bound in the echelons of West One
Slim chance of the odd long journey kept me clinging to him for too long
Locked in a car all day, came home and worked on Children At Play
I had no deal then, but I had fifty blank tapes in a bag waiting
I knew it wouldn't be long before I wrote Carbon Cones
Only last week, I noticed that the colours of the
Lights in my studio are the same as the ones you conjure in my mind
(Yellow and green, green pea green, cherry red and red and blue)
When my Amiga reads from a disk you know the
Green fills the room and your long summer dress fills my mind

My other jobs were none to speak of: "Make a coffee for the man in Avid One
Drop these lunches off then take this Betacam to a place on Dean Street"
Most posts seemed to involve the lifting of heavy boxes
A man of such small frame as I broke into several sweats a day
Whilst failing to procure even the hint of any musculature improvement
Heavy-lifting days are in the bin now, but I still dip into tempting
Wearing the odd suit, attending the odd interview
Subsidising the drum programming you hear today

Only last week, I noticed that the colours of the
Lights in my studio are the same as the ones you conjure in my mind
(Yellow and green, green pea green, cherry red and red and blue)
Just yesterday I was woken by a flashing of a
Light from my studio confirming that this timestretch was complete

Only last week, I noticed that the colours of the
Lights in my studio are the same as the ones you conjure in my mind

Overall Meaning

In "Lights," Tundra Max reflects on his past career as a driver and his journey as a musician. He contrasts his life driving for pay man Lance with his passion for music, symbolized by the colors of the lights in his studio. Max hints at his persistent drive to pursue music and his belief in his own creative potential, despite his lack of resources at the time. His portrayal of the overlapping of the lights in his studio and the mental images conjured up by his music demonstrates an introspection into the artistic process.

The first verse details Max's experience driving a car, with "hairy arms [feeding] the wheel through my palms." He is committed and has honed his reflexes, yet he has failed his driving test twice. Although he dislikes the job, he feels trapped. However, he spends his free time working on music, even without a recording contract. The second verse considers Max's other unsatisfactory jobs, proving his dedication to drum programming. He perseveres through exhausting physical labor, all because of his commitment to music.

The chorus connects music with sensory experiences, such as "Yellow and green, green pea green, cherry red and red and blue", coloring the music in our minds. When the colors of the lights in his studio reflect his mental images, the intersection of art and reality becomes abundant. Overall, the track is a heartfelt testament to the struggle of pursuing creative passions amidst other demands, and how Tundra Max navigates life.

Love that Max Tundra is back on the scene and especially that A. G., who owes quite a bit to Tundra's work imo, has finally scratched his back in return.

As much as I was happy to hear from Tundra on the Daphne & Celeste comeback album, the work wasn't entirely his and the Soft Landing remix didn't quite hit the spot for me, so it left me hungry for more... really hope there's some new release coming!
