Former members include co-founder Sam Genders (vocals, guitar), who left the band before the release of "...And Then We Saw Land" (Mar 2010, Full Time Hobby).
Tunng started after Genders and Lindsay met, in the latter's Soho basement studio (below a clothes shop). Genders was a singer-songwriter and Lindsay had the studio (making electronica and living through advertising music production). They found that Lindsay's distinctive way with twinkling sounds, and tight production, significantly enhanced the folky songs they were writing - A signature sound developed.
Tunng's first album was "Mother's Daughter And Other Songs" (Jan 2005, Static Caravan) - However, since Genders made at first the choice not to play live, Lindsay found Jacobs and Bates. to help with live shows. Over time, Winter and Smith became part of the band and have all contributed more to recordings, first on "Comments Of The Inner Chorus" (May 2006, Full Time Hobby), then more so on "Good Arrows" (Aug 2007, Full Time Hobby).
The 2010 album, "...And Then We Saw Land", has been the most successful to date and was recorded in the semi-legendary Play Industries Studio, Shoreditch, with access to its vast collection of vintage synthesizers helping develop a more delicate and inter-woven production style. Glenister added live drums to the gigs, from 2009, for a heavier sound, a long way from the seated studio project Tunng once was.
On "Turbines": "...often beloved for its bucolic oddness and modernist gleam, Tunng's polyphonic future folk blossoms with enchanting melodies, simmering grooves, and found sound that has propelled the band into a paradise of exceeded expectations" (Absolute Punk).
Arms
Tunng Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
brick dissolve and the walls get thin
In your arms I see trough my skin
my organs float and the candles glow
In your bones the sound of the rain
soothes something my darkest heart
Visceral thing, intangible song
Here I go again
Here I go again
In your brain lights creep to my eyes
stars get stuck in my swollen throat
And you're on fire and I'm getting close
event horizon, a whirlpool's edge
Here I go again
Here I go again
Here I go again...
The lyrics of Tunng's song "Arms" depict a person experiencing an intense connection with someone. The first verse portrays a physical and emotional sensation of losing oneself in another person's presence. The singer feels like the world around them is dissolving, and they are becoming one with their partner. The second verse expands on this theme, describing a feeling of overwhelming emotion that is affecting the singer's entire being. They experience a sense of weightlessness as their organs seem to float, and the candles set a romantic mood. The rain outside is juxtaposed with the calming effect it has on the singer's "darkest heart."
In the chorus, the lyrics "Here I go again" suggest that the singer has felt this way before, and it is a familiar, yet intense feeling. The third verse continues the theme of the singer becoming one with their partner, but this time it is portrayed as a mental connection, with lights from the partner's brain seeping into the singer's eyes. The final line of the verse, "event horizon, a whirlpool's edge," is a metaphor for the point of no return, a place where things become irreversibly entangled.
Overall, the lyrics of "Arms" convey the intense emotional and physical connection between two people. The language used is largely metaphorical, allowing the listener to interpret the lyrics based on their individual experiences.
