Jenny Again
Tunng Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jenny so shy
Jenny so shy
So shy
So shy
Jenny
Throw the knife into the stream
Run away across the fields
Leave me lying where I fell
Rivers running out of me
Meet my Jenny in the lane
Take a car and run away
Get as far as you can get
Before the new day

Your heart beats quick and strong
Your mind pores over it all
Don't worry because no one saw me fall

Hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm
Jenny so shy
Sit inside a little chef
Look around but not at her
See my kisses on her lips
See my fingers in her hair
Think of this against your will
See the knife edge slipping in
See the questions in my eyes
As I ask them

I went so quick it makes you shudder that I'm gone
Are we so brittle has your soul turned into stone
And though you loved me I'm not Jenny in the night
Jenny
Some decisions don't thread back to being right

Your head blurs quickly tonight
Your edges diffuse in the light
Don't tell me that your throat is getting tight

Change your name and find a job
Marry Jenny in the spring
Buy a dog and call him Pete
Push the children on the swings
Think about me now and then
Try to find a peaceful space
Count the days as they go by
Count the lines upon your face

Your heart beats quick and strong
Your mind pores over it all
Don't worry because no one saw me fall

Hmm, hmm
Hmm, hmm

Overall Meaning

The song "Jenny Again" by Tunng appears to be a song about unrequited love, obsession, and perhaps even violence. The repetition of "Jenny so shy" suggests that the singer is obsessed with someone who is timid and withdrawn. The first verse describes the singer essentially committing suicide, urging Jenny to flee while they are left for dead ("Leave me lying where I fell / Rivers running out of me").

The second verse goes on to suggest that the singer has some kind of violent intentions towards Jenny, envisioning himself kissing her and slipping a knife into her without her noticing. The chorus, "Your heart beats quick and strong / Your mind pores over it all / Don't worry because no one saw me fall" suggests a sense of paranoia, like the singer is trying to assure themselves that they won't be caught for their potentially violent thoughts and actions.

The third verse takes a sudden turn towards a more benign and domestic situation, suggesting that the singer is urging Jenny to move on with her life without him. He suggests she change her name, marry someone else, and start a family, all while he haunts her thoughts ("Think about me now and then"). In the end, the chorus repeats once more, perhaps suggesting that despite the singer's insistence that no one saw him fall, he is haunted by a sense of guilt and self-doubt.

Overall, the song seems to be about the intense emotions that can accompany one-sided love or obsession, and how that can spiral into a dark and potentially dangerous place.

When this track came out i was 18 and very freshly in love with a beautiful yet aloof girl. We would listen to this album in her mother's house in York. I was living with my dad in a pretty rough Yorkshire village and it was the first time I'd felt the soft mental space of a middle class all female home. She gave me "another road side attraction" by Tom Robbins before she left to go to a university in the South, effectively breaking up our relationship.
This track brings back the exact emotion of how i felt reading the book and "coming of age".
We don't talk anymore because of money she never paid back to me, however, i will never forgot that turning point in my life and those days waking around York and sitting next to the river, feeding ducks and laying on the grass. Dream like, timid young love. I bought i saxophone to impress her..... I was shit at the time but I'm now i professional saxophonist living in Portugal. Reminiscing about time and how quickly things are forgotten and never to be relived. It's an oddly fitting song to accompany such thoughts.
