Peggy Sang The Blues
Turner Frank Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Peggy came to me in my sleep
In the middle of the night
On a Friday night last week
She whispered: "Hush and don't be scared"
Got me a few words of wisdom
That I came back to share

And she said
It doesn't matter where you come from
It matters where you go
No one gets remembered
For the things they didn't do

I said, "Peggy won't you stay here for awhile?"
We can drink whiskey
We can play cards
And we can get wild
She said: "We can play poker and we'll play for keeps"
"I only play angels lately and they never let me cheat"

It doesn't matter where you come from
It matters where you go
No one gets remembered
In this listless life
For the things they didn't do

And you can say I had a good start
And you could say I had class
And you could say I was born beneath the ceiling made of glass
But I always kept an open house
And yeah I always did right by my friends
And when it comes to Saint Peter's gate
I told the people remember one who needs to make amends

'Cause better times are coming
Better times ahead
And no one gets remembered
My deathless child
Don't waste too long in bed

And Peggy said:
It doesn't matter where you come from
It matters where you go
And no one gets remembered
In this listless, loveless life
For the things they didn't do
Now, now, now, now, now

Well Peggy sang the blues
I've been drifting off
Well Peggy sang the blues
And I've drifted off
Well Peggy sang the blues
And I've drifted off

Well Peggy sang the blues
Peggy sang the blues

Overall Meaning

The song Peggy Sang The Blues by Frank Turner is a poignant, thought-provoking reflection on life, death, and leaving a legacy. The song begins with the singer, Frank Turner, recounting a dream where Peggy, a past acquaintance, appears to him and imparts words of wisdom. She tells him that it doesn't matter where you come from in life, but where you go, and that nobody gets remembered for the things they didn't do. This statement is a powerful reminder that life is fleeting, and we should strive to make the most of it.

The second verse sees Frank inviting Peggy to stay a while, to play cards and drink whiskey. But she declines, stating that she only plays poker with angels now, and they never let her cheat. This cryptic statement suggests that Peggy has moved on to the afterlife, and perhaps this is where her words of wisdom come from. The third and final verse sees Frank reflecting on his life and the legacy he wants to leave behind. He acknowledges his privileged upbringing but argues that his reputation comes from his actions and how he treated his friends. He concludes by saying that better times are ahead and that we should not waste too much time worrying but instead embrace living and doing.

Overall, the song Peggy Sang The Blues is an introspective and philosophical look at life, death and morality, conveyed through beautiful imagery and clever wordplay. The message of the song is clear, to live fully in the present, to make the most of every day before it's too late, and to leave a legacy worth remembering.

This song has been a part of my life nigh on 10 years now. And just like I did when I was 15 all those years ago, to this day, the line "Better times are coming, better times ahead" still gets me to tear up like it did then. This song gave me hope as a kid, and Frank Turner was a huge inspiration and an amazing person every time I got to share a word with him at his concerts in the states. And I have a feeling this song will still be in my life for many more years to come.
