The band, whose name is derived from the bumpy Oklahoma toll-roads and their hard lived folk singing heroes, are proof that isolation can be the mother of originality. Cutting their teeth in roadside dance halls and honky-tonks has made a serious impact on the band’s musical style, which walks the line between Woody Guthrie and Waylon Jennings. “Bossier City,” the band’s debut album, is testament to the small towns in which they were raised. It combines Folk, Country, Cajun, and Bluegrass with stories of longing, humor, tragedy, and general life in rural America.
Breaking down traditional barriers between the audience and the stage is something in which they excel. Fast, gritty, and often drenched in beer, the Troubadours perform to both their fans and new audience members with an genuine sincerity about them. They continually gather ground both literally and figuratively as they travel up, down, and across the Midwest.
Their follow-up album, “Diamonds & Gasoline”, was release 2010 with veteran producer and songwriter Mike McClure and legend Joe Hardy (ZZ-Top, Steve Earle). They relentlessly play shows in Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Texas.

a lonely dove is flyin'
Mournin' for his one true love,
He can't be blamed for cryin'
He can't be blamed for cryin'
Well the rooster, he got 20 gals
bet he's happy as a lark...
Put em all to bed at dark
Put em all to bed at dark
Well if you been true
Well if you been true
you better look me in the eyes
'Cause all I smell is cheap perfume
and Gin and smoke and lies
Well where were you last Saturday
all dressed up so pretty?
With your blue-eyed ballroom boy
in Oklahoma City
in Okalhoma City
Well a spade is made for diggin' dirt
and an axe is made for choppin'
And darlin' my heart's hard as nails
they hammer in a hardwood coffin
In a hardwood coffin
Well if you been true
Well if you been true
you better look me in the eyes
'Cause all I smell is cheap perfume
and Gin and smoke and lies
Well way down in the bottom land
a big black crow is laughin'
Noone dares to go down there
Wonder what has happened
Wonder what has happened
Well in the early Autumn wind
a lonely dove is cryin'
Mournin' for his one true love
He can't be blamed for cryin'
He can't be blamed for cryin'
Well if you been true
Well if you been true
you better look me in the eyes
'Cause all I smell is cheap perfume
and Gin and smoke and lies
Well if you been true
Well if you been true
you better look me in the eyes
'Cause all I smell is cheap perfume
and Gin and smoke and lies
The song "Gin Smoke Lies" by Turnpike Troubadours tells a story of betrayal and heartbreak. The singer confronts their cheating partner, asking them to look them in the eyes and confess their infidelity. The lyrics use metaphors to paint pictures of the narrative, such as a lonely dove flying in the autumn wind, a rooster with multiple partners who are put to bed at dark, and a spade and an axe symbolic of the hardened heart of the singer. As the story unfolds, the song describes the singer's struggle to come to terms with the reality of their unfaithful partner and their pain.
The lyrics also make references to the cheap perfume and gin and smoke, which suggest that the singer's partner has been dishonest and unfaithful, and possibly even resorting to vices to hide their guilt. The song builds up to a climax with the singer asking their partner where they were last Saturday, dressed up and beautiful, dancing with someone else. The song ends with the imagery of a big black crow laughing in the bottom land, wondering what has happened.
Overall, the song's lyrics are powerful and emotive, telling a gripping story of love, betrayal, and heartbreak.

Don’t you whence from sorrow
never let it borrow,
who you are in your name
don’t you hide from the pain
as there ain’t no shame
in barely getting by,
freedom is something
you cannot buy
Either you want it or you don’t,
I must sigh
