Gravity
Turnstile Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Right now, break me out. Show me how to feel
No doubt I've been living a lie
Something over my eyes
Stuck Inside, scared to make a sound

I keep me down
It's just the gravity I keep around
Expose to fear, pound it out
And forget about self-doubt
Because I've been living a lie
Something over my eyes
Hard lift my focus from the ground

I keep me down
It's just the gravity I keep around

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Turnstile's song "Gravity" are a powerful expression of breaking free from the confines of self-doubt and fear. The singer is asking to be released from their current state of being and shown how to truly feel alive. They acknowledge that they have been living a lie, something that has been clouding their vision and holding them back. They are stuck inside, too scared to make a sound and afraid to lift their focus from the ground.

However, the singer realizes that they are the one keeping themselves down, bound by the weight of their own gravity. They must expose themselves to their fears and pound them out, pushing aside their self-doubt and forget about their past lies. The singer repeats the phrase "it's just the gravity I keep around" to remind themselves that they are the one holding themselves back and that they have the power to break free.

Overall, "Gravity" is a song that speaks to the struggles of self-doubt and the power of personal agency. It encourages listeners to face their fears head-on, to break out of their own self-imposed gravity and to live their lives to the fullest.

@DIYDylana What is important is that the scene has changed in such a way where the dominant style from that previous period is actually no longer the dominant style. I think this wider change happened because bands like Turnstile were able to achieve significant popularity and a corresponding degree of cultural influence. Even though many artists with a similar style may have always been there, their records might not have had the same cultural impact as records like Nonstop Feeling, for example

@DIYDylana The former style is what dominated the hardcore scene ~6 years ago. Anyone who was there knows this. Because a small handful of bands like Turnstile released records like this at that time, we now have a more stylistically diverse hardcore scene today
