Summer Song
Tuuli Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey Yeah Yeah
Hey Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

You never listen to a word I say
But I'm not making sense anyway
It's Summer time so I don't really mind

Yeah the radio is playing our song
The sun is shining all day long
The top is down and nothing could go wrong

Hey Yeah Yeah
Hey Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

You took a job at the record store
Cause you were tired of being broke
You should be working but your reading magazines

You never call me when you say you will
Always collect and I foot the bill
When it comes to romance
Boy your just a failure

Hey Yeah Yeah
Hey Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

So who am I
To expect a reply
It's the same sad story as last summer
I fell for your act
It's a real sad fact
I believed that we'd always be together

Now the sun is getting really annoying
And I can sense that you are trying to avoid me
This summer sucks but it's winter in Australia

Hey Yeah Yeah
Hey Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Overall Meaning

In Tuuli's "Summer Song," the singer is reflecting on a relationship that seems to be falling apart. The singer accuses the other person of not listening and not making any sense, though it seems the singer is not making much sense themselves. Despite this, the singer doesn't mind too much because it's summertime and they're enjoying the sun and the radio playing their song. But throughout the song, the singer reveals frustration with their partner's lack of effort and commitment to the relationship. The partner has taken a job at a record store to avoid being broke, but then spends their time reading magazines instead of working. They also fail to call when they say they will, leaving the singer to foot the bill. The singer comes to the sad realization that they fell for the partner's act and now the relationship is falling apart. As the summer heats up, so does the tension between the two. In the end, the singer is left feeling rejected and heartbroken.

The song appears to be a reflection on a specific relationship that has come to an end, but it also touches on the broader themes of summer romance and the fleeting nature of young love. It's set against a backdrop of sunny days and upbeat music, which adds an ironic layer to the song's underlying sadness. The repetition of "Hey Yeah Yeah" serves not only as a catchy hook but also to emphasize the singer's frustration and disappointment.

We're currently having a heat wave in the UK (honestly, this is not a typo) and it reminded me of this song. So here I am, playing it loud whilst working from home during the pandemic.

I always thought these girls never got the credit they deserved, great catchy tunes that I remember watching on P-Rock TV. Even my History teacher had their CD.

Always wished I could have seen them play live...I also though i'd be married to Claire Blake by now, but alas. I once messaged them on MySpace and they replied, I printed it out and stuck it on my bedroom wall lol, I miss this era so much...when did I get so old.

at least you got to enjoy it when it was alive... Just across the pond in an equal heat wave, we never heard of this band, let alone the song...

Jenny and Dawn had the harmonies of the Murmurs, with much heavier music. I've been trying to figure out how describe Tuuli for almost 20 years now. That's it. Just wanted to share my thoughts about Tuuli.
