Incubus
Tuxedomoon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Thin man in a powder blue suit
With eyes that slice you through
The cut of his clothes was strange indeed
A hundred years too soon
A passing stranger with no business here
A rest stop on a voyage through time
A rest stop
A passing stranger
In a dream we had
The man with the patented face
The one with the telescope eyes
The man who walked away
Someone handed me a gun
Hit the switch and ran
I laughed and shot at the ceiling
I laughed and shot the walls
The smell of fusing metal
Permeates the scene
Music plays in empty halls
Music plays in empty halls
Underneath the street lights

A stranger calls your name
He flickers to a halt and slowly fades away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tuxedomoon's song Incubus paint a haunting imagery of a mysterious, time-bending figure in a powder blue suit. The thin man with his sharp eyes and strange clothes appears out of place, a passing stranger on an unknown mission. He is like a rest stop on a voyage through time, significant yet fleeting. In the dream-like state, the man with the patented face, the one with the telescope eyes, walks away leaving behind a sense of mystery and confusion.

The lyrics take a turn as someone hands the singer a gun, and the scene escalates into chaos. In a fit of impulsiveness, the singer laughingly shoots at everything, creating a sense of alarm and danger. The smell of fusing metal suggests destruction and the aftermath of the chaos. And yet, the music still plays in empty halls, perhaps an eerie reminder that life goes on despite the chaos.

Overall, the lyrics depict a sense of chaos, destruction, and unease, all tied together by the strange figure of the thin man in the powder blue suit. The dream-like quality of the song adds to its haunting and unsettling nature.

I heard this within months of its release and was blown away. This was way ahead of its time and sadly, in a way, it still is.

Their best song hands down.

@anonyarena

I agree, this song was the best song they ever did. That's saying a lot, because they have done several good ones, (their doomy version on 19th Nervous Breakdown comes to mind) but this Incubus, song was truly their greatest achievement.
