Frontman Tyler Joseph has stated the following regarding this track:
"I know you have the ability to hurt yourself, I recognize that, but let’s take that energy and let’s point it at something else, let’s divert that, let’s kind of shift momentum and look at something like art, or something like this music specifically or even point it at me, just point it anywhere. But don’t point it at yourself … that song will always be important to me."

When the sun shines on the ground
And shows what you have done
It shows where your mind has gone
And you swear to your parents
That it will never happen again
I know, I know-ow-ow
What that means, I know-ow-ow-ow-ow
That you all have guns
And you never put the safety on
And you all have plans
To take it, to take it, don't take it, take it, take it
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep
But I can't, but I can't when you all have
Guns for hands, yeah
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep
But I can't, but I can't when you all have
Guns for hands, yeah
Let's take this a second at a time
Let's take this one song, this one rhyme
Together, let's breathe
Together, to the beat
But there's hope out the window
So that's where we'll go
Let's go outside and all join hands
But until then you'll never understand
That you all have guns
And you never put the safety on
And you all have plans
To take it, to take it, don't take it, take it, take it
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep
But I can't, but I can't when you all have
Guns for hands, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Whoo
(Da-da-da-da-da)
(Da-da-da-da-da)
(Da-da-da-da-da, ah, uh)
(Da-da-da-da-da)
We've turned our hands to guns
Traded our thumbs for ammunition
I must forewarn you of my disorder, or my condition
'Cause when the sun sets
It upsets what's left of my invested interest
Interested in putting my fingers to my head
The solution is, I see a whole room of these mutant kids
Fused at the wrist, I simply tell them they should shoot at this
Simply suggest my chest and this confused music
It's obviously best for them to turn their guns to a fist
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep
But I can't, but I can't when you all have
Guns for hands, yeah
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep (I'm trying to sleep)
I'm trying, I'm trying to sleep (I'm trying to sleep)
But I can't, but I can't when you all have
Guns for hands, yeah
The song “Guns for Hands” by Twenty One Pilots touches deeply on mental health and suicide. The lyrics speak to the feelings of hopelessness and despair that can take hold of someone struggling with mental illness. The first verse highlights the guilt and shame that often come with these thoughts, such as promising one’s parents that it will never happen again. The second verse describes the struggle of trying to sleep with these thoughts constantly racing through the mind.
The chorus reveals the song’s title and the metaphor at the heart of the track. It suggests that the hands are holding guns, which can represent the way mental illness makes someone feel like they’re holding a weapon against themselves. It also speaks to the idea that the mind can be a dangerous place when left unchecked. In the bridge, the lyrics express the need for understanding and empathy for those dealing with mental illness.
Overall, the song is a powerful message about the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health struggles. It’s a call for understanding and support rather than judgment and stigma.

@jefferyalvey9885
I first heard this band two years ago and I've been in love with them since that time.
I turned my (at that time) twelve year old daughter on to these guys, and she, too, has been in love with them since.
I took her to see these guys live in St. Louis last year - her first concert - and we had a magical time.
Her and I are close, but we've bonded even more because of our deep love for this remarkable band.
But I digress.
Your comment actually brought tears to my eyes. I've never shed a single tear for any one Youtube comment.
I just wanted to thank you for your wise and wonderful words.
You've made my day.
I don't know you, and as weird as this may sound, I just love you to pieces.
I truly hope that you have a long, happy and healthy life.
Please continue to stay positive.
