Leave the City
Twenty One Pilots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm tired
Of tending to this fire
I've used up all I've collected
I have singed my hands
It's glowing
Embers barely showing
Proof of life in the shadows
Dancing on my plans

They know that it's almost
They know that it's almost over
They know that it's almost
They know that it's almost over

The burning
Is so low it's concerning
'Cause they know that when it goes out
It's a glorious gone
It's only time before they show me
Why no one ever comes back
With details from beyond

They know that it's almost
They know that it's almost over
They know that it's almost
They know that it's almost over
They know
They know that it's almost over
They know
They know that it's almost over
They know
They know
They know

In time, I will leave the city
For now, I will stay alive
In time, I will leave the city
For now, I will stay alive
In time, I will leave the city
For now, I will stay alive
In time, I will leave the city
For now, I will stay alive

They know that it's almost
They know that it's almost over
They know that it's almost
They know that it's almost over
They know
They know

Last year
I needed change of pace
Couldn't take the pace of change
Moving hastily
But this year
Though I'm far from home
In TRENCH I'm not alone
These faces facing me

They know

They know
What I mean

Overall Meaning

In "Leave the City," Twenty One Pilots' lyrics tell the story of someone who is quite fed up with life's demands. The song is believed to be about Tyler Joseph's struggles with suicidal thoughts as well as the band's need to escape from the pressures of touring life. The first verse speaks to feeling defeated and burnt out by constantly tending to the fire, which metaphorically represents his own life. Tyler mentions that he has utilized everything collected in life and has even burned his hands in the process. The second verse, on the other hand, indicates that the singer is coming to terms with the fact that life is fleeting, and that his is very close to coming to a close. He notes that his energy, which represented by the embers, is waning, and that the "glorious gone" is practically around the corner. Tyler goes on to mull over the notion of an afterlife and suggests that he will soon know why people do not return from it with many details.

The pre-chorus, "They know that it's almost over," and the chorus, "In time, I will leave the city / For now, I will stay alive," express Tyler's viewpoints on the pressures of life and the hope of death letting him escape his problems. The lyrics suggest that he knows that the end is near, but he is determined to live a bit longer despite everything. The third verse references the past and the pressures of the previous year and how he couldn't keep up. Tyler notes that he is now away from home and feels isolated. In spite of all of these feelings of despair, he closes the song by stating that he has found camaraderie on his journey, and he acknowledges that others understand his journey's meaning.

“In time, I will leave the city
For now I will stay alive...
Though I’m far from home
In Trench I’m not alone
These faces facin’ me,
They know, they know what I mean”

As a follower of Christ who was saved from a dark place of anxiety and a depressive state by him one day 2 years ago, this song has a special meaning...
The true home we long for has been assured to us through Christ’s death and resurrection, but it is not available to us yet. We long for it on the basis of our faith and the faith of saints who have gone before us. In the meantime, we are “in between” a place of death and a place of life. We are in Trench.
This track Leave the City, lingers on this resolve to live and finishes with a resigned hope that i quoted above.
Here's a biblical passage that relates:
“All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.”
Hebrews 11:13-16

I know this song can't mean the same to just anyone. This song, to certain members of the Clique like me, have a deeper connection to this song. We feel as if Tyler and Josh are our lifesavers, our lifelines. Without it we would crumble, like chalk when being crushed. This song talks to me in a way no other song, from twenty one pilots or from other artists, does. It delivers a message, a special message. That message is "Stay alive, we will help you through the dark tunnels. Just follow the torches." This is the most important sentence in my life right now, and I have been going through so much recently. My life depends on this song and album and band right now, and I will have to hold on to them for as long as I can. When Tyler sang, the "they know ooh" part at 3:29, that conquered me immediately. I knew I hadn't needed to listen further. It was just perfect. The feeling washed over me, something I had not felt in years, and it felt good. They saved me in my darkest hours, they remind me to stay happy and alive during the day and to relax in the night. This song tells me, being a constant reminder, to take pride in what is sure to die. To be proud of myself, to take pride in my life. This may apply to you, but this is my experience. This is not to get likes, or anything of the sort, but to share my feelings and my love for this band. They will help you through the tunnels, just follow the torches.
Each and everyone of you are special and loved. I promise. Believe me. Trust the people who help you through times when you need them most, trust the Banditos, trust twenty one pilots.
