Morph
Twenty One Pilots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can't stop thinking about if and when I'd die
For now I see that "if" and "when" are truly different cries
For "if" is purely panic and "when" is solemn sorrow
And one invades today while the other spies tomorrow
We're surrounded and we're hounded
There's no "above", or "under", or "around" it
For "above" is blind belief and "under" is sword to sleeve
And "around" is scientific miracle, let's pick "above" and see
For if and when we go "above", the question still remains
Are we still in love and is it possible we feel the same?
And that's when going "under" starts to take my wonder
But until that time, I'll try to sing this

If I keep moving, they won't know
I'll morph to someone else
What they throw at me's too slow
I'll morph to someone else
I'm just a ghost
I'll morph to someone else
Defense mechanism mode

He'll always try to stop me, that Nicholas Bourbaki
He's got no friends close but those who know him most know
He goes by Nico, he told me I'm a copy
When I'd hear him mock me that's almost stopped me
Well we're surrounded and we're hounded
There's no above or a secret door
What are we here for?
If not to run straight through all our tormentors?
But until that time I'll try and sing this

If I keep moving, they won't know
I'll morph to someone else
What they throw at me's too slow
I'll morph to someone else
I'm just a ghost
I'll morph to someone else
Defense mechanism mode

I'll morph to someone else

Lights they blink to me, transmitting things to me
Ones and zeroes, ergo this symphony
Anybody listening? Ones and zeroes
Count to infinity, ones and zeroes

I'm surrounded and I'm hounded
There's no "above", or "under", or "around" it
For "above" is blind belief and "under" is sword to sleeve
And "around" is scientific miracle, let's pick "above" and see
For if and when we go "above", the question still remains
Are we still in love and is it possible we feel the same?
And that's when going "under" starts to take my wonder
But until that time

I'll morph to someone else, I'm just a ghost

If I keep moving, they won't know
I'll morph to someone else
What they throw at me's too slow
I'll morph to someone else
I'm just a ghost
I'll morph to someone else
Defense mechanism mode

If I keep moving, they won't know
I'll morph to someone else
Defense mechanism mode
I'll morph to someone else

Not done, not done, not done

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Morph" by Twenty One Pilots explore the concepts of mortality, identity, and defense mechanisms. The first few lines delve into the question of death and the different emotions that come with the possibility of dying. While "if" is associated with panic, "when" is linked to sadness. The lyrics then shift to the idea of being surrounded and hounded without any escape routes. The singer explains that believing in something blindly is just as limiting as hiding behind a sword, while science can feel like a miracle, but it is still limited. The singer then questions if love is still possible if they were to go "above," as well as exploring the idea of changing identity as a defense mechanism. The singer claims that if they keep moving forward and morph into someone else, they can outrun what is thrown at them. They are just a ghost, but this is their defense mechanism mode. The song ends with the lyric "Not done, not done, not done", followed by Josh Dun's name, suggesting that the song is not truly finished yet.

In terms of interesting facts about "Morph," the song features a wide range of genres, such as rap, rock, and reggae. The song also contains references to French mathematician Nicolas Bourbaki and his philosophy of anonymity. Tyler Joseph, the lead singer, has explained that the song is about his fear of getting stuck creatively and how he uses music as a way to morph into a new person. In interviews, he has also revealed that the song features subtle references to their previous albums. Another interesting fact is that the song was originally called "Yeast." Before the release of the official music video, the band released a video entitled "Level of Concern 3" that features Josh Dun dancing to the song dressed as a clown. Finally, the song has a unique structure, with the chorus appearing three different times throughout the track in slightly different forms.

@fourbriceno1461

its a really long comment please bear with me

I always think of what the MVs for the rest of the album would be like.
I imagine, that after Nico brings Tyler back. He falls back into his darkest place, knowing that if he stays, he'll die on a Neon Gravestone, but doesn't know how to leave without going back to dema, to feed off of his pain, and make music. I imagine Neon Gravestones being filmed in a really small room, just with Tyler, with his hands and neck covered in black, and his eyes covered in red... The return of Blurryface. The angle of the camera shifts between left to right, to show that Blurryface and Tyler are arguing, and as the video progresses the black on his hands and neck slowly fade, and BF is trying to convince Tyler to stay and die like neon, but Tyler doesn't want to stay, he wants to be free, like fire. By the end of the MV, Tyler doesn't have black hands or neck, and is now convinced to leave the city, and now knows that he doesn't need Dema for his music, because he now wants to use his revelation, as music.
He now knows that the only way to escape Dema is by the front gate, and not secret passages. The only way to leave your problems behind, is not to sneak past them, and fill them with alcohol and parties, or momentary things. And I think leave the city is the perfect example for it, because he now has to leave, and not escape. In that video, I imagine Tyler not trying to sneak around at night, like in Nicop and the Niners, but now just walks to the front gate of Dema, and leaves.
After leaving the city, he goes back into the trench, and is now faced with the doubt of coming back, or keep moving forward, because of the amount of time he's passed on Dema, and because he zoned out for so much he trips, and falls, getting bruises and cutting his lip. In Cut my Lip I imagine, as Tyler walks all bruised up and bleeding, He is scared that Nico will come back from him, so he starts telling himself that that he's strong enough to keep moving through pain and sadness, and feel free again. When the video ends, he has come out of the trench, and is now in front of the bandito camp, and falls unconscious because of his tiring journey, but now, has become free.
After he wakes up on the bandito camp, he knows that Dema is always going to be there, and just like Chlorine, it may be cleansing at times, but can kill him. So he know is faced with finding a new representation of what he wants his music to be, and he does this, by the cheetah, that is on his basement. The cheetah, being a representation of himself, and the people he loves. On the song Pet Cheetah, i think the scene would be Tyler's basement, and there's no one there, just a Vulture, and a Cheetah. He understands that us, the clique mean so much to him, that at his best career point, blurryface, and his lowest point mentally, Dema, he created a point of view of us, that we would listen to his music, just if he used his pain as food, like the vulture he is, but at the end he understands that his fear of losing us, is not as important as his mental health, and needs to let go of that fear. The cheetah and the vulture on that video, are the two sides of Tyler, fighting, it's Blurryface, and Clancy, and they are fighting, to try and kill each other, to see what inspiration is more important to Tyler, the vulture, his pain and sadness, or the cheetah, the wild creature that feeds of his loved ones and his happiness. At the end of the fight, the end of the music video, we see that the cheetah killed the vulture, and stands on top of it. Tyler is now ready, to fight his bishops.
After that, on Morph, we see all of the banditos in front of the gate of Dema, and they enter and start taking people out of the city. As that happens in the background, Tyler casually walks to where the bishops, with a gun, and a torch. As he gets there, the bishops try to catch him, but they can't touch him now, as he now doesn't belong to them. He kills every bishop one by one, and at the end of the song, points the gun to Nico's head, and shoots.
Finally, the bandito music video, is rigtht after Tyler killed Nico, and he throws his torch to start a fire that would burn the whole city down. As he walks out of dema being burned down, he now acknowledges his revelion, he now knows he's a Bandito. He now knows that he created Dema, and he's the only one that can destroy it, that's why he started the fire. As he walks out by his own, Josh starts walking alongside him, then his wife and daughter get there, his parents, his friends, all the people he cares about joins him, and as the song picks up near the end, they start running out of Dema, all of them cheering and smiling. Tyler, after not smiling through all of blurryface and trench, let's off a smile, and grabs his wife's hand, out of dema and into true freedom.
