Tear in My Heart
Twenty One Pilots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, oh
Oh, oh

Sometimes you gotta bleed to know
That you're alive and have a soul
But it takes someone to come around
To show you how
She's the tear in my heart
I'm alive
She's the tear in my heart
I'm on fire
She's the tear in my heart
Take me higher
Than I've ever been

Songs on the radio are okay
My taste in music is your face
But it takes a song to come around
To show you how

She's the tear in my heart
I'm alive
She's the tear in my heart
I'm on fire
She's the tear in my heart
Take me higher
Than I've ever been
Than I've ever been
Than I've ever been
Than I've ever been
Oh, than I've ever been

You fell asleep in my car, I drove the whole time
But that's okay, I'll just avoid the holes so you sleep fine
I'm driving, here I sit, cursing my government
For not using my taxes to fill holes with more cement
You fell asleep in my car, I drove the whole time
But that's okay, I'll just avoid the holes so you sleep fine
I'm driving, here I sit, cursing my government
For not using my taxes to fill holes with more cement

Sometimes you gotta bleed to know, oh, oh
That you're alive and have a soul, oh, oh
But it takes someone to come around
To show you how

She's the tear in my heart
I'm alive
She's the tear in my heart
I'm on fire
She's the tear in my heart
Take me higher
Than I've ever been

My heart is my armor
She's the tear in my heart
She's a carver
She's a butcher with a smile
Cut me farther
Than I've ever been
Than I've ever been
Than I've ever been
Oh, than I've ever been

My heart is my armor
She's the tear in my heart
She's a carver
She's a butcher with a smile

Cut me farther
Than I've ever been

Overall Meaning

The song "Tear In My Heart" by Twenty One Pilots begins with the lines sometimes you gotta bleed to know, that you're alive and have a soul but it takes someone to come around to show you how. Here the artist is talking about the importance of having someone in your life who can help you realize the value of your existence. It is said that sometimes, when we go through tough times or experience pain, we begin to question the value of our lives, and it is only when someone comes around and provides us with support, comfort, or a new perspective that we are able to see the beauty in our individuality and existence.

The chorus follows, where Tyler Joseph expresses gratitude for the love and affection of his partner, who helps him see the colors in life, and reminds him of the joy of living. The lines She's the tear in my heart, I'm alive, she's the tear in my heart, I'm on fire, she's the tear in my heart, take me higher are repetitive, signifying the importance and the intensity of the love he has for his partner, and the role she plays in his life.

The song ends with the artist saying that his partner is his armor, which means that she is his strength and support, and throws light on the power of love and affection that can help us grow and become better versions of ourselves.

I remember reading an interview with Tyler where he explained how he started dating Jenna in 2013. At the time he already has some success and he was impressed by the fact that she treated him "like a normal person" as opposed to most everybody else around him who either wanted something from him, or wanted to be around his fame. He said something to the effect of: 'people would tell me what they though I wanted to hear, she told me what she thought I needed to hear'

I think that's what's being reflected in the video. All the people on the street become grotesque versions of themselves, seeing him as something they can use and contorting themselves to gain his favor: fake. Then he sees Jenna and she walks past, no intent in her eyes. He's intrigued so he follows her into the restaurant.

Coming to her table, he's surprised that she's honest with him - "sometimes you gotta bleed to know, that you're alive and have a soul" - He responds - "but it takes someone to come around to show you how" - She then proceeds to beat the crap out of him. -- She's not afraid to hurt him, to tell him the truth, to tell him things that he doesn't WANT to hear, but will make him a better person in the end.

Once that's done, she shows that she can be tender... and b/c he's already seen that she isn't "fake" and trying to curry his favor, he can trust her tenderness.

... at least, that's what I think now as I write this at 3am after a little too much grappa! :)
