The song touches upon topics such as maintaining hope through difficult times, both mentally and physically. The lyrics encourage the listener to keep faith and push through hard times, whether the difficulty is coming from an internal or external source.
When asked about “The Hype” by Coup de Main magazine, Tyler stated that the narration is meant to be told from the point of view of a younger version of himself.
Tyler Joseph told fans in a Reddit AMA that "“The Hype" was one of the most difficult songs he tackled on Trench as far as the writing. Naturally, this tells us that the subject matter is complex to Tyler, most likely representing emotions he finds difficult to convey through song.
When asked about “The Hype” by Coup de Main Magazine, Tyler answered:
"I think that song in particular, I wanted to go back to – - When I was a bit younger, maybe even in grade school, just some of the production of that song reminded me of that. But also, lyrically addressing who I was when I was a bit younger, and what I wish I would’ve heard. That song particularly is kind of talking about the difference between an internal pressure and external pressure. A lot of the things that I write about come from wrestling with an internal pressure, but there are those external pressures of the world around us that can be addressed as well, and that song particularly addresses those in a way that – - Just an encouragement to keep going, to let things roll off your back that deserve to be put aside."
“The Hype” is what the world is telling him. Tyler’s depression causes his internal thoughts to haunt him. Since a lot of his songs deal with these internal thoughts and ideas, Tyler decided to make this one about the external ideas that come to him too.
It was certified Gold by the RIAA on August 13, 2020, making it the fifth song from "Trench" to achieve this milestone.

My interior world needs to sanitize
I've got to step through or I'll dissipate
I'll record my step through for my basement tapes
Nice to know my kind will be on my side
I don't believe the hype
And you know you're a terrible sight
Just don't believe the hype
Yeah, they might be talking behind your head
Your exterior world can step off instead
It might take some friends and a warmer shirt
But you don't get thick skin without getting burnt
Nice to know my kind will be on my side
I don't believe the hype
And you know you're a terrible sight
But you'll be just fine
Just don't believe the hype
No, I don't know which way I'm going
But I can hear my way around
No, I don't know which way I'm going
But I can hear my way around
No, I don't know which way I'm going
But I can hear my way around
No, I don't know which way I'm going
But I can hear my way around
But I can hear my way around
Nice to know my kind will be on my side
I don't believe the hype
And you know you're a terrible sight
But you'll be just fine
Just don't believe the hype (don't believe the hype)
Nice to know my kind will be on my side
I don't believe the hype
And you know you're a terrible sight
But you'll be just fine
Just don't believe the hype
Nice to know my kind will be on my side
I don't believe the hype
And you know you're a terrible sight
But you'll be just fine
Just don't believe the hype
The lyrics of Twenty One Pilots’ song The Hype speak to the importance of self-acceptance and the need to disregard false expectations created by others. The opening lines describe a feeling of being frozen or stuck, in need of a mental and emotional cleanse. The singer recognizes that they need to take a step forward, or they will be consumed by negativity. Yet, they are taking precautions by documenting their journey for their personal records.
The chorus emphasizes the importance of having a supportive community of people who understand them, despite what others might say or think. The singer is resilient and continues to push through, despite being seen as a “terrible sight” by others. They advise the listener to ignore the hype and to believe in themselves instead.
The final lines stress the idea of being lost, but finding one’s way through listening to intuition and trusting the journey ahead. Overall, the message of the song is to not pay attention to negative opinions or pressures from others, and to be true to oneself.
