They began singing together in gospel ensembles and choirs, meeting in the group NOW (News of the World) before turning to secular music. They gained initial recognition during the mid and late '70s as background singers for disco performer Sylvester. Their glorious voices capably supported his on the hits "Dance (Disco Heat)" and "(You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real," plus his albums. The legendary performer/producer/composer Harvey Fuqua signed them to his Honey label that was distributed by Fantasy. They issued the LP Backatcha and the single "Taking Away Your Space" in 1980. They subsequently had three chart singles as the Weather Girls from 1982-1985, the biggest of which was "It's Raining Men" in 1982. Big Mamas With Big Voices- simply the best backup singers ever. The following info is just fun trivia for those who may not know the story: Sylvester was lucky to get these ladies and they were fortunate to have met him as all 3 went on to such great success. Sylvester found these ladies in time to record his third album "SYLVESTER" (with the singles "Down, Down, Down" and "Over And Over") and was generous enough to give them their own track on that album- "I Been Down" (later the 2 ladies recorded this again on their 2nd album "Backatcha" but added Jeanie Tracey as a third voice). However, it was Sylvester's 4th album "STEP II" that blew up and made all 3 household names with their songs "DANCE (DISCO HEAT)" and "(YOU MAKE ME FEEL) MIGHTY REAL", later followed by Sylvester's 6th album (a double LP live set) called "LIVING PROOF" in which all 3 got to show off live. Much to Sylvester's dismay, Fantasy records decided to have Two Tons O' Fun take advantage of their popularity by recording their own album, 1979's "TWO TONS O' FUN" which spawned 3 hit singles "JUST US", "DO YA WANNA BOOGIE, HUNH?!" and "I GOT THE FEELING" feat Sylvester, as well as some other great songs "MAKE SOMEONE FEEL HAPPY TODAY and "EARTH CAN BE JUST LIKE HEAVEN". Martha really shows off her talent on the ballads "GONE AWAY" and a song Sylvester gave her for this debut album- "TAKING AWAY YOUR SPACE". That debut was such a hit Fantasy Records quickly had them record a couple more songs and added it to some leftover tracks from the first album and they put out their second album called "BACKATCHA"- unfortunately, Fantasy Records decided to change their name to THE TWO TONS, which made no sense and the ladies were not happy about that. The second album didn't have any hit singles, but were still wonderful songs for the duo. When Fantasy dropped them, due to low sales for that second album, a couple years went by and Paul Jabara stepped in and gave them a song he and Paul Shaffer (Saturday Night Live/David Letterman Show) wrote called "IT'S RAINING MEN", and the rest is Herstory. "IT'S RAINING MEN" was offered to and turned down by Donna Summer, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, etc., and when given to Martha & Izora, it was Izora and her wonderful sense of humor that came up with the name THE WEATHER GIRLS (to go with a song about rain) and she immediately went and got a patent on the name so the next record company couldn't do a name change on them like Fantasy did. The song appeared first on a 12" single in late 1982 to go with Paul Jabara's 4th LP "PAUL JABARA & FRIENDS" that came out on Columbia/CBS Records in 1983, then on 1983 The Weather Girls Columbia Records/CBS debut LP "SUCCESS". The "SUCCESS" cd was re-released in 2013 on the UK Cherry Pop label with bonus trax of the 12" singles. Their next album, 1985's "BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY" coincided with Fantasy Records capitalizing on their renewed fame by releasing the 1985 album "THE BEST OF THE TWO TONS (AKA THE WEATHER GIRLS)" which consisted of trax from their 2 albums with Fantasy as well as the hit single "IT'S RAINING MEN". The "BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY" album was released in 1985 and released for the first time on cd in 2013, again by the UK Cherry Pop label with bonus trax of the 12" singles. In 1986 THE WEATHER GIRLS sang with BOB SEGER on his big hit "LIKE A ROCK". Their 3rd and last Weather Girls album was 1988's "THE WEATHER GIRLS" featuring Sylvester on the song "LOVE'S ON THE WAY". This album had 3 tracks produced by Full Force and 3 tracks produced by Reggie Lucas- unfortunately, this third album didn't do so well in sales and their record contract ended. Martha went on to work with C&C Music Factory for the group SEDUCTION's 1989 debut album "NOTHING MATTERS WITHOUT LOVE", as well as C&C's 1990 debut album "GONNA MAKE YOU SWEAT", and BLACK BOX'S 1990 debut album "DREAMLAND" (so much has been written about Martha being used and not credited that I will skip that well-known scandal). In 1991, Izora released her 1sr solo single- the 12" "DON'T LET LOVE SLIP AWAY", followed by her 2nd solo single "LET'S GET BUSY" - both singles did not do well. She then asked her only daughter, Dynelle (Izora also has 6 sons) to join her as the new WEATHER GIRLS and they moved to Germany and began a whole new career which was very successful- not only in music but Izora opened a restaurant called THE WEATHER GIRLS SOUL FOOD KITCHEN. They released the 1993 album "DOUBLE TONS OF FUN", 1995 album "THINK BIG" (which has the duet of Izora and Jimmy Somerville doing a remake of the Sylvester song "STAR (EVERYBODY IS ONE)"), 1998 album "PUTTIN' ON THE HITS" which featured Dennis Edwards singing a duet with Izora on a remake of his classic solo song from 1984 "DON'T LOOK ANY FURTHER". This 1998 album is full of great 70's disco remakes which if you are a big Izora fan you'll love her sense of humor on her versions of "CAR WASH", "AIN"T GONNA BUMP NO MORE (WITH NO BIG FAT WOMAN)", "PICK UP THE PIECES", "LADY MARMELADE", "WE ARE FAMILY", etc. Dynelle quickly became known throughout Europe as "Little Izora" because that Lil' mama could belt it out as well! Unfortunately, Izora became ill with heart problems around 2003 and so Dynelle teamed up with her step sister Ingrid Arthur and they became the third incarnation of THE WEATHER GIRLS and went on to release 2 albums- 2004 "TOTALLY WILD" and 2009 "THE WOMAN I AM" which includes a remake of the classic "JUST US". Izora passed away at 62 years old in 2004. Martha of course went on to great things as well- she released her first real solo album in 1992 which contained a remake of the classic "JUST US"- Todd Terry worked on all the singles released off the album and she was all over the musical map for quite a few years and released a second solo album in 2013 called "SOMETHING GOOD". Just some fun stuff for those who are interested.

Lots of great research there but with one exception. Fantasy did not make them change their name to The Two Tons... they changed their name after being informed that an Oklahoma gospel act had already registered the group name "Two Tons o Fun" since 1958.

Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown are hardly backup singers. Both are considered to be fierce vocal Divas in Boogie/Disco/House & RnB. Jocelyn with vocals on tracks by Masters at Work, Todd Terry (which both Marth and Jocelyn did vocals on "Jumpin"), Salsoul, Basement Boys.. et al... just to name a few. Martha of course was the vocals for C&C Music Factory's breakout album, which initially she did not get any credit for.

I bought this album in 1980 and I still have it. These women could SANG. I knew who they were with their connection with Sylvester so when I bought this album I was led down a road to the greatest singing and wonderful music that provided these two women singing. Their second album was enjoyable but their third album had no fire to the first two and they faded out. Sorry Izora left here too soon but Martha is still doing it.

3rd album??? 2 albums under the Two Tons moniker on the Fantasy label then 3 albums as The Weather Girls with CBS/Columbia. Was there a 3rd album as the Two Tons??? I love these girls and always hoped for a reunion between Martha & Izora but sadly that will never be with the passing of Miss Izora Rhodes. R.I.P.
