It's Raining Men
Two Tons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hi, hi! we're your weather girls
Ah-huh
And have we got news for you
You better listen!
Get ready, all you lonely girls
And leave those umbrellas at home.
Alright!
Humidity is rising, barometer's getting low
According to all sources, the street's the place to go
Cause tonight for the first time
Just about half-past ten
For the first time in history
It's gonna start raining men.

It's raining men! Hallelujah! It's raining men! amen!
I'm gonna go out to run and let myself get
Absolutely soaking wet!
It's raining men! Hallelujah!
It's raining men! Every specimen!
Tall, blonde, dark and lean
Rough and tough and strong and mean

God bless mother nature, she's a single woman too
She took off to heaven and she did what she had to do
She taught every angel to rearrange the sky
So that each and every woman could find her perfect guy
It's raining men! Hallelujah!
It's raining men! Amen!
It's raining men! Hallelujah!
It's raining men! Amennnn!

I feel stormy weather
Moving in about to begin
Hear the thunder
Don't you lose your head
Rip off the roof and stay in bed

God bless mother nature, she's a single woman too
She took off to heaven and she did what she had to do
She taught every angel to rearrange the sky
So that each and every woman could find her perfect guy
It's raining men! Yeah!

Humidity is rising, barometer's getting low
According to all sources, the street's the place to go
Cause tonight for the first time
Just about half-past ten
For the first time in history
It's gonna start raining men.

It's raining men! hallelujah!
It's raining men! Amen!
It's raining men! Hallelujah!

It's raining men! Amen!
It's raining men! Hallelujah!

Overall Meaning

"It's Raining Men" is a joyous, exuberant song with a message designed to empower women who've been alone for too long. The song was a collaboration between Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer, and it became a hit almost as soon as it was released in 1982. Two Tons of Fun, a disco duo consisting of Martha Wash and Izora Armstead, recorded the song and had a massive hit with it, reaching number 46 on the US pop chart and number 1 on the US dance chart.

The song's lyrics tell the story of how women everywhere are about to enjoy a rare meteorological miracle. As the temperature rises and the barometer drops, the streets are the place to be because for the first time in history, it's going to start raining men. The chorus of the song is a call to action, urging women to "get out and let themselves get absolutely soaking wet." Weather girls Martha Wash and Izora Armstead declare that they have news for all the lonely girls out there, and they encourage them to leave their umbrellas at home.

The song is an anthem of female empowerment, with the message that love is about to rain down on them. Mother Nature is portrayed as a powerful ally to all women, and the song asserts that she has rearranged the sky so that every woman can find her perfect match. The song's message of joy and celebration is underscored by its catchy beat and fun, upbeat melody.

I've been a huge fan of these 2 since Sylvester met them in 1976 and they all recorded together on his 1977 LP SYLVESTER (his 3rd LP). The video above is when they performed live in Japan- which explains why the audience is reserved and respectful, it's their culture. However, this is truly the best live version of these 2 singing "It's Raining Men"- I love the ad-libs. The 2 started out as Two Tons Of Fun in 1977 and by 1979 their popularity as backup singers for Sylvester had grown so much that their record company signed them to their own record deal, thus breaking up the trio. Billboard magazine reported that their debut album was one of the most anticipated in 1980. By the end of 1980 they released a second album with a new name the record company gave them without notice- The Two Tons. They weren't happy about it and soon after their record company dropped them. In 1982 Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer (Sat. Night Live/David Letterman Show) wrote "It's Raining Men" and after Donna Summer, Diana Ross, etc., turned it down, they gave it to Izora Armstead & Martha Wash. Izora came up with the name The Weather Girls and the rest is Herstory. Izora also got a patent on the name so that their new record label CBS Records couldn't screw it up for them again. Ahhh... the memories and the trivia just never ends....
