Winterway
The birds are flying far away
Wintertime
Winterway
Why can't we fly away
Is it worth of suffering here
Wintertime...
Escape
Is it worth...
Wintertime...
Escape
Sata sokeaa koiraa
lumessa tallaa ja ulvoo
Yö nuolee sinua
kädet kiusaavat hiljaa
Sisar veljelleen
itkien lasta vuottaa
Noita yksin valvoo
ja omaan vereensä hukkuu
Should I stay
or should I say
I hate this wintertime
And move away
fly away
Wintertime
Winterway
The birds are flying far away
Wintertime
Winterway
Why can't we fly away
Linnut jäätyy
kuolee kesken lennon
Karja vajoaa
alle upottavain kinosten
Sisar veljelleen
itkien lasta vuottaa
Noita yksin valvoo
ja omaan vereensä hukkuu
Should I stay...
Wintertime...
Is it worth...
Wintertime...
Escape
The song "Wintertime" by Two Witches is a melancholic reflection on the hardship of living through the winter season. The song opens with "Winterway," a metaphorical phrase that suggests the long, dark journey through the winter months, and immediately follows with the birds "flying far away," leaving a sense of abandonment and loneliness. The chorus repeats this sentiment; a desire to escape the hardships of winter and to fly away to a better, more hopeful place.
The lyrics then delve into the pain of living through this season: "Is it worth of living here, Is it worth of suffering here." These lines suggest a deep existential crisis - questioning the meaning of life and whether the hardship we endure is worth it. The Finnish verse adds to the theme of hardship with depictions of dogs howling in the snow, the loneliness of waiting for a loved one, and a witch drowning in her own blood.
In a sense, the lyrics to "Wintertime" are a call to escape, questioning whether the hardship we endure in winter is worth it, and seeking solace in an idealized place where we can fly away and leave our troubles behind.
