Holding the strand
Walking upon the frill
Open our hands
Upon the sands
We are the children still
Still...
To the streets
Then the hill
To the top
Looking left to the city
Looking right onto the [?]
To the right
To the [?]
To the lights that are [?] down
Down, down, down
They are [?] down
Here we will stand
Holding the strand
Walking upon the frill
Open our hands
Upon the sands
We are the children still
Still...
And when you're here
Take my hand
And we'll go into the [?]
To disappear from this land
For all we know it is our fear
Here we will stand
Holding the strand
Walking upon the frill
Open our hands
Upon the sands
We are the children still
Still...
The lyrics of Ty Segall's song "The Hill" convey a sense of childlike wonder and innocence in the midst of an urban landscape. The song invites the listener to join in a journey, marked by holding onto a strand and walking along a frill, towards the hill that looms in the distance. The scene is one of contrasts, with the city visible from atop the hill, and a mysterious undefined place to disappear into. The repetition of "still" at the end of each verse adds to the feeling that this is a timeless moment, where the children are still present and connected to one another.
There is a sense of nostalgia in the lyrics as well, with the idea that despite the passing of time and changes to the city and world around them, the children are still here. The song seems to be a call to return to a simpler time, where the beauty of the world is seen with fresh eyes and the worries and fears of the modern world can be forgotten for a moment. The idea of taking someone's hand to disappear into the unknown is both exciting and a little bit scary, but it allows for the possibility of experiencing something new and transformative.
Overall, "The Hill" captures a sense of whimsy and adventure that is often lost as we grow older, and reminds us to appreciate the beauty that still exists in the world around us.
