The two main influences on the band are the Beatles and Black Sabbath, and keyboardist Josh Silver has expressed a love of Pink Floyd--evidence of which can be heard in the atmospherics of his production techniques.
The band arose from the ashes of the band Carnivore and gained popularity with their songs "Black No. 1" and "Christian Woman" from the Bloody Kisses album. The album was the first in Roadrunner Records' catalog to go both gold and platinum. They have successfully toured with Pantera, Life of Agony, and dozens of other established and up-and-coming bands, as well as taking part in Ozzfest. The band had VHS and DVD documentary releases in addition to their CD releases and contributions to movie soundtracks and compilations.
Steele died of sepsis caused by diverticulitis (initially reported as heart failure) on April 14 2010 at the age of 48.

I used to listen to The Beatles a lot, when I was a kid. But only knew their popular songs. That I loved.
I grew older and The Beatles starts beeing just: "that old band I used to listen to, when I was younger". I just listened to, when the radio played their typical radio songs.
A few years ago I started to dug deeper into the amazing bandwidth of them. And from then on, I was fascinated by the lesser known songs.
As a big Type O Fan, I knew already, that The Beatles has been named as an inspiration. And now...
I finally can see Life is Killing me (pun intended!? ^^), but especially World Coming down as dark and doomy Beatles albums, the Beatles never did.
And that makes me love and respect both bands even more.

Thank God for my son Michael! He turned me on to Type O and assured me that Peter’s voice wasn’t being toyed with in a studio. I was a fan immediately and have loved him and this band ever since. Wow. Peter Steele was a giant. I love this guy forever. I’m now 65 years old and will always love Type O Negative with a full heart.

@@joeyparadis3650 lol indeed.....like both of them on a mix of Thorazine and LSD, if that were possible without the effects canceling each other out......actually, now that i think of it, both of those guys probably were at some point......but Peter, like you said, had such a unique voice.....couldnt mistake it for anyone else, which made them so legendary, they were their own genre of music in some ways

“Being four idiots and not knowing anything, we didn’t realise that The Beatles charge $25,000 per song, they were the most expensive songs in the music industry that you could get the rights to for a cover. And we did a medley, so it was three songs! It came out great, but the record company was like ‘This is gonna cost $75,000! You guys are outta your minds! Who’s gonna pay it? Not us!’”- Some how Josh eventually convinced the label to foot the bill
