The two main influences on the band are the Beatles and Black Sabbath, and keyboardist Josh Silver has expressed a love of Pink Floyd--evidence of which can be heard in the atmospherics of his production techniques.
The band arose from the ashes of the band Carnivore and gained popularity with their songs "Black No. 1" and "Christian Woman" from the Bloody Kisses album. The album was the first in Roadrunner Records' catalog to go both gold and platinum. They have successfully toured with Pantera, Life of Agony, and dozens of other established and up-and-coming bands, as well as taking part in Ozzfest. The band had VHS and DVD documentary releases in addition to their CD releases and contributions to movie soundtracks and compilations.
Steele died of sepsis caused by diverticulitis (initially reported as heart failure) on April 14 2010 at the age of 48.

Everything Dies
Type O Negative Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But she died
And my uncle Lou
Then he died
I'm searching for
Something which can't
Be found but I'm hoping
I still dream of dad
Everything dies
My ma's so sick
She might die
Though my girl's quite fit
she will die
Still looking for someone
Who was around
Barely coping
Now I hate myself
Wish I'd die
No why? Oh God I miss you
No, why? Oh God I miss you
I really miss you
The song "Everything Dies" by Type O Negative deals with the inevitability of death and the struggle that comes with coping with the loss of loved ones. The first two verses speak of the singer's experiences with death, losing both their aunt and uncle Lou before expressing their ongoing search for something that cannot be found. The mention of still dreaming of a deceased father adds further weight to the experiences of loss, emphasizing the longevity of the singer's grief. The third verse speaks to the singer's ongoing experiences with mortality, with their mother being ill and their acknowledging that despite their partner being healthy now, they like everyone else will eventually die. The final lines express the singer's deep longing for those they have lost, with repeated pleas to God for their presence.
The repetition of the phrase "everything dies" serves both as a refrain and a reminder that death is inevitable. It also emphasizes the feelings of despair and hopelessness in the face of death, with the singer struggling to come to terms with their own mortality and those around them. The song's somber tone and sparse instrumentation also contribute to its overall melancholic atmosphere, allowing the lyrics to play a front and center role in conveying the singer's experiences.
