The two main influences on the band are the Beatles and Black Sabbath, and keyboardist Josh Silver has expressed a love of Pink Floyd--evidence of which can be heard in the atmospherics of his production techniques.
The band arose from the ashes of the band Carnivore and gained popularity with their songs "Black No. 1" and "Christian Woman" from the Bloody Kisses album. The album was the first in Roadrunner Records' catalog to go both gold and platinum. They have successfully toured with Pantera, Life of Agony, and dozens of other established and up-and-coming bands, as well as taking part in Ozzfest. The band had VHS and DVD documentary releases in addition to their CD releases and contributions to movie soundtracks and compilations.
Steele died of sepsis caused by diverticulitis (initially reported as heart failure) on April 14 2010 at the age of 48.

Prelude of Agony
Type O Negative Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Is there no difference between women and fire?
One burns the spirit
The other the flesh
Is sex worth the price of certain death?
Absolution
I am whole
I am
Open her loins and into the hearth
Don't let her flames consume your heart
For the quest of holy copulation
The end result?
Self immoliation
Absolution
I am whole
Absolution
I am
Love is life
Life is love
Love is pain
Pain is death
Agony and ecstacy
Your cries of pain my pleasure
To know my machine internally
Your torment I treasure
Lifeblood combines with semen
Your screaming my laughter
The compressor is running smoothly
'Tis vengeance I am after
Begging becomes your lovesong
You're dying
I masturbate
For the crime of burning me
I give to thee
Jackhammerape

The lyrics to Type O Negative's song Prelude to Agony delve into the dark and destructive nature of desire, particularly in regards to sex. The lines "There is no pain like that of desire/Is there no difference between women and fire?" explore the dangerous, often uncontrollable nature of human desire and the capacity for it to bring about pain and destruction. The following lines "One burns the spirit/The other the flesh/Is sex worth the price of certain death?" touch on the common trope of comparing women to fire, but also asks the question of whether or not the pursuit of sexual pleasure is truly worth the potential consequences.
The chorus of the song, "Absolution/I am whole," suggests that the singer of the song finds a sort of relief or salvation in these destructive desires. However, the following verses reveal the true cost of such pleasure-seeking, particularly in regards to the objectification and harm of others. "Open her loins and into the hearth/Don't let her flames consume your heart/For the quest of holy copulation/The end result?/Self immolation" speaks to the idea of using others for one's own pleasure, but ultimately destroying oneself in the process. The final verse, with lines like "Your screaming my laughter/The compressor is running smoothly/'Tis vengeance I am after" reveals a darker side to the singer, one that takes pleasure in others' pain and seeks revenge for his own harm.
