U-Roy's musical career began in 1961 when he began DJing at various sound systems, eventually working with King Tubby. Tubby was then experimenting with his equipment, in the process of inventing dub music. With U-Roy as his most prominent DJ, King Tubby's new sound became extraordinarily popular and U-Roy became a Jamaican celebrity. He recorded Dynamic Fashion Way, his first recording, in 1969 for Keith Hudson and then worked with almost every producer of the island: Lee Perry, Peter Tosh, Bunny Lee, Phil Pratt, Sonia Pottinger, Rupie Edwards, Alvin Ranglin and Lloyd Daley.
In 1970, Jamaican singer John Holt became enamoured of U-Roy's technique. Working with Duke Reid, U-Roy's fame grew through a series of singles, including Wake the Town and "Wear You to the Ball".
U-Roy's success continued throughout the 1970s, most famously with the album Dread in a Babylon with its iconic picture of him disappearing in a cloud of cannabis smoke while holding an enormous pipe, and a song called Chalice in the Palace, fantasising about smoking with Queen Elizabeth II in Buckingham Palace. He had become one of the island's biggest stars by the early 1980s, also garnering significant acclaim in the United Kingdom. His latest album is 2000's Serious Matter.
I Can't Love Another

And my heart fell at your feet
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
Somebody else stood by your side
And he looked so satisfied
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you
The-en suddenly I got that old-time feelin'
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you (still in love with you)
(Today I passed you on the street)
Today I passed you on the street
(And my heart fell at your feet)
And my heart fell at your feet
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
(Somebody else stood by your side)
Somebody else stood by your side
(And he looked so satisfied)
And, ya know, he looked so satisfied
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
Oh, it hurts to know another's lips will kiss you
And hold ya just the way I used to do
Oh-oh-oh-oh heaven only knows how much I miss, how much that I miss ya
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
(Still in love with you)
The lyrics of U-Roy's "I'm Still In Love" is a tale of heartbreak and longing. The singer recounts how he ran into the person he used to love on the street, and his heart "fell at [their] feet." Even though that person was with someone else, and that someone else looked "so satisfied," the singer couldn't help but admit that he was still in love with them. The physical proximity caused a memory of their past to flood his mind, and he couldn't resist his old-time feeling of love.
The lyrics convey a bittersweet emotion that many people can relate to. Clearly, the singer has not fully moved on from his past love, and seeing them happy with someone else hurts. The line "Oh, it hurts to know another's lips will kiss you" is especially poignant because it highlights the physical and emotional pain of seeing someone you love with someone else. Despite the pain, the singer can't help but love their past partner, and the final line of the song, "I can't help it if I'm still in love with you" underscores that sentiment.
Overall, the song expresses a sense of unrequited love and the difficulties of moving on from past romantic relationships. The singer's pain is palpable, even in the simple lyrics of the song, making it a timeless classic that will continue to resonate with audiences for generations to come.
